Mau & Ricky — known for their smash hits “Mi Mal” and “Desconocidos” — have been named the kings of Miami’s carnaval 2020.
The announcement was made by The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana during a press conference on Wednesday (July 17). This is the first time Carnaval Miami has crowned a second generation of family musicians.
“As a by-product of The Kiwanis of Little Havana’s mission to enrich the lives of generations of Miami’s youth through a host of community programs, it’s truly an honor to be able to do better for our own community — keeping us close to home,” said Jesus Lebeña, president, Kiwanis Club of Little Havana in a press statement. “Carnaval Miami has been feeding our hearts and souls since 1978 when it crowned its first King of Carnaval. Today, we crown our first-ever second-generation, brother-duo, Mau y Ricky, crowned 27 years after their father, the legendary Ricardo Montaner. Two generations, one legacy, and three crowns.”
For the brother duo, being crowned Kings of Carnaval is an honor. “Not only for joining a host of legendary icons but for knowing that one of those icons was our dad. He would always share his fond memories of how special that day was for him and my grandmother, our mother’s mom — truly priceless. We’re thrilled to, not only put on the best concert but to getting involved with our community and accomplishing more!” they added.
