An award-winning wedding venue in Buckinghamshire has created the UK’s first-ever sign language video tour.

Hedsor House, near Taplow in Buckinghamshire, is an 800-year-old luxury wedding venue that has many strings to its bow – including being named Tatler’s No. 1 venue and being endorsed by celebrities from Ricky Gervais to Tom Hardy.

The Georgian house, which has also been used as a filming location for ‘Downton Abbey’, is now also seeking to expand the accessibility of its wedding facilities with the creation of the UK’s first signed video tour, to give deaf couples the same insight into the services on offer as a hearing couple would have.

The video, which coincides with a range of other steps towards inclusivity at Hedsor House, including work with sign language officiants and hearing dog-friendly events, was released during the International Week of Deaf People, from September 19 to September 25.

Alim Jadavji, a British Sign Language interpreter who recently got married at the venue, has been involved in the development of the video and said he was “thrilled” at Hedsor House’s willingness to increase the accessibility of its services.

He added: “Being hard of hearing myself with a profoundly deaf family, it was so important that at whatever venue I chose to have my wedding, they understood my niche requirements.

“This didn’t feel like a tick box exercise, but rather an instinctive and natural progression to be the best venue they can be and be accessible to as many people as possible.

“I am so excited that deaf people will finally be able to enquire about booking Hedsor House and have this accessible option to understand the history, layout and opportunities of the house.

“I am also thrilled to have been a part in making it happen.”

Mark Shephard, Managing Director at Hedsor House said: “At Hedsor, we strive to lead the way in terms of what we offer, aiming to go above and beyond people’s expectations of us.

"We are proud of our track record, setting new industry standards as a leading wedding and events venue, and we hope to continue to raise the bar, making all the necessary changes, and much more, to ensure the deaf community feel as welcome as possible at Hedsor.”
