Klin is a town in the Moscow Region, the administrative centre of the Klinsky District. A town with the same name was first mentioned in written sources in 1317. This year is considered the date when the town was founded.

In 12-13th centuries, Klin territory was a part of the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. In the early 13th century, Vladimir Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich built a number of fortress towns trying to protect the borders of his vast principality. One of such fortresses was built on the bank of the Sestra river and for many centuries remained an important strategic site on the way from Moscow to Veliky Novgorod.

The town's favourable location on vivid trade routes determined its fate turning it into an apple of discord for Russian princes. Located between the cities of Moscow and Tver, Klin was often the place of bloody confrontation between the Principality of Moscow and the Principality of Tver. In the late 15th century, when the former finally won, the town became its constituent.

Today Klin is a large industrial centre of the Northern Moscow Region. Klin was praised as one of the most actively developing territories of the Moscow region during the last 7 years by economic, social and cultural characteristics.
