Alderley Edge features in a list of the top 50 'coolest' places in the UK. The footballer-belt town ranks 31st in the list, which is topped by Cornwall's Polperro and also features Liverpool's Baltic Triangle and Shropshire's Church Stretton.

The survey ranks communities according to number of independent shops per head of population; the range of cultural events on offer; Instagram impressions; and their popularity as location sfor films and TV shows.

Alderley Edge is ranked as Cheshire's 'coolest' place by the Naturecan poll, 'narrowly' beating Macclesfield to top spot. Northwich ranks third, with tiny Delamere in fourth.

The bustling Georgian high street of Tarporley pushes the village into fifth place. Alderley Edge has been used several times as a filming location for TV and film including popular TV series Clocking Off and Cold Feet.

The surveyors polled 5,000 people, with panels consulted in every county and major city. The surveyors point to Alderley Edge's lively night-time scene, with a plethora of restaurants on bars on offer. It also lists 'healthy retail therapy', 'local community activism' and a 'family-friendly atmosphere' make it a 'happening place for all ages.'

Naturecan’s chief executive Andy Duckworth said: “Alderley Edge is the coolest place to live in Cheshire, narrowly beating Macclesfield in second place.

“All the 50 places on the list would have been worthy winners and show why the UK and Cheshire in particular are such beautiful places, loved by film makers and tourists from all over the world.

“What is interesting is how influential Instagram has become in boosting tourism in many of our top 50. It is a massive help for visitor numbers, too, if a popular film or TV show uses a town as a location.

“Hidden gems which are largely only visited by local tourists can find themselves being showcased throughout the world if they are pictured by the right influencer or featured in a movie."
