Remedios is the oldest settlement in the province of Villa Clara and one of the oldest in all of Cuba. The city, founded in 1513, is located 42 km northeast of Santa Clara. The centuries-old colonial charm is unique to the city and could only ever compete with that of Trinidad.

The peaceful city’s close proximity to the coast made it an easy target for looters and pirates during the 16th century. The excessive raids pushed the population out of Remedios twice and further inland in search of a more secure location. Eventually, the population made their way to modern Santa Clara in a mass exodus. Today, the city of Remedios continues to retain its original colonial nature. Houses, museums, churches and other buildings from this period continue to stand tall in the city and envelop the essence of Cuba. If visitors want to experience an authentic colonial Cuban town, Remedios is the place to do so.

Today, the city’s proximity to the coast plays in favour of the city rather than pose a problem. It is close to Cayo Santa María (Santa Maria Keys), which allows visitors to travel back and forth without incurring an excessive expense.
