Students at a Derby secondary school are being offered support following the death of a year 10 pupil on Tuesday.

A message from Chellaston Academy head teacher Kevin Gaiderman has been posted on the school's website.

It reads: "It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that following a substantial period of ill health, despite external medical and professional support, one of our year 10 students passed away yesterday.

"As a school, we have utilised the expertise and knowledge of Chellaston Academy staff, external psychology professionals and care services to ensure the emotional wellbeing of pupils and staff.

"The news of this tragic loss has been communicated to all students and support offered in a variety of ways.  As a school and a community we come together during difficult times and on this occasion it will be no different. Our thoughts are with the family."

Police and an emergency medical team were called to an address in Chellaston yesterday.

A spokesman from the force said: "We were called by colleagues at EMAS to an address in Chellaston at around 11.20am on Tuesday, March 19.

"A 14-year-old girl was taken to Royal Derby Hospital where she sadly passed away.

"Officers are currently supporting the family, who our thoughts are with at this time. They are also working closely with the school she attended to provide support to staff and pupils.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

"A file is currently being prepared for the coroner."
