One dead after early morning fire in New Sharon

One person died in an early morning fire in New Sharon, Iowa.

Just before 2 a.m. Friday, the New Sharon Fire Department responded to a structure fire on 100 block of North Elm St., according to a news release from the department. 

Crews determined a detached garage had caught fire. The garage happened to be behind the fire department, and firefighters were able to knock down the blaze within minutes, Chief Josh Crouse said.

One person died. The individual's name is not being released until family can be notified. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Crouse said.
