Gloria Weil Jones, a long-time resident of the Williamsburg, VA area, died Friday, the 19th of September at her home in Kingsmill on the James, Williamsburg, VA. Gloria grew up in Port Huron, MI. She was preceded in death by her father, Herb Weil, and her mother, Marion McCarty Weil, both of Port Huron, MI. At age 16, she went to live with her Uncle Louis Weil, who at the time was the editor and part owner of the Port Huron Times newspaper. She began her career working for the newspaper interviewing visitors to Port Huron, MI along Gratiot Beach. She especially enjoyed interviewing visitors from Cincinnati and St. Louis, MO. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in Monroe, MI, Gloria continued her education at Marygrove College in Detroit MI. Following graduation, she left for New York City and landed an Account Executive position at J. Walter Thompson Company, where she was responsible for making sure her client’s designs were placed in high fashion magazines like Vogue and Mademoiselle. She met her husband, Mark E. Jones, at of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1948. They were married three years later in Delray Beach, Florida in 1951. Four years later, they welcomed their daughter, Kelley P. Jones. A year later, Kevin arrived and Marlene completed the family in 1959…or so they thought! In 1968, Cynthia A. Jones was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina while Mark was working in the military attaché office for the United States Army. Gloria lived in Latin America for six years where her husband attended the Uruguayan Army General Staff School and later the Argentina Army War School. While in Montevideo, Uruguay, she was elected President of the American Woman's Club in 1963 and 1964. In 1968, the family settled in Mount Vernon, Virginia. After taking time off to raise her children, Gloria took a career shift and became a successful real estate agent working for Mount Vernon Realty. Mark and Gloria retired in Williamsburg, VA in 1991, where Gloria continued her real estate career at Hornsby Real Estate Company. She participated in many clubs and organizations in Williamsburg, like the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Bible Study, book and Bridge Clubs. In addition, she completed the Virginia Master Gardner Program. As a Master Gardner, she volunteered her time giving lectures, creating gardens, conducting research, and many other projects. Gloria is survived by her husband, Mark, Colonel U.S. Army (Ret), her daughters named above, son, Kevin, Colonel USAR, RTD and his wife, Georgia. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Jeffrey Cortez, Krystal Jones, Hannah Horstman, Anthony Jones, Dameon Horstman and her great grandchild, Gloria Cortez. Memorial gifts may be made to: Saint Mary Catholic Central High School, 108 W Elm Ave, Monroe, MI 48162. A gathering will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home located at 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Va. on October 23rd from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held on Friday October 24th at 11:00 am at St. Bede Catholic Church located at 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, Va.
