San Giovanni a Piro and surroundings

San Giovanni a Piro stands on a barren and stony hillside at the foot of Mount Bulgheria, from where the view embraces the entire gulf. The architectural structure of its ancient center is typically medieval, with concentric streets, narrow and cobbled, noble palaces that preserve intact the imposing stone doorways and balconies with fine wrought iron railings and elegant plazas. In San Giovanni a Piro have withstood the ravages of time the sanctuary of Pietrasanta, just outside the town, and the beautiful church of St Peter and St Gaetano. The village of Bosco can exhibit the ruins of a Brazilian monastery in ancient times dedicated to the cult of St. Nicholas. In 1827, Bosco was completely destroyed by the troops of Francis I of Bourbon for hosting one of the protagonists of one of the bloodiest insurgent movements of the pre-Risorgimento. Today, on the outskirts of the village, stands a huge ceramic panel, on which the brush of the painter Ortega has reconstructed the most significant stages of that tragic event. Besides the ruins of the abbey in 1200, also to visit the old town and Chapel of St. Rocco and Our Lady of Carmine.La seaside hamlet of San Giovanni a Piro, Scario, is a small pearl set in a dreamlike landscape: beaches and enchanting caves that stretch at the foot of towering rocky outcrops, a coquettish waterfront dotted with chic bars, restaurants and meeting places, a marina which houses both the "fireballs" of the many boaters who converge here every summer that the "fishing boats" of the many fishermen place. Scario, in the summer of 44 BC hosted the holiday of Marco Tullio Cicerone, was famous for its fishing and preparation of garum, the delicious fish sauce of which the Romans were greedy. It was destroyed twice, in the fifth century by the Vandals and Saracens in the tenth century, it flourished in the mid-seventeenth century, thanks to the craftsmanship of its "caulk", involved in the construction and repair of fishing vessels. From this period the coastal towers visible on opposite sides of the country: the Garagliano Tower and the Tower Olive. The settlement of the village acquired its present appearance in the late eighteenth century thanks to the noble families of San Giovanni a Piro, especially Counts Carafa, who built a summer palace, known as the "home contesca". To admire the Church of Saint Anne and the Church, which since 1846 houses a statue of the Madonna donated by a ship captain survived a shipwreck.
