Isola di Capo Rizzuto


Known for the hamlet of Le Castella, the village of Isola di Capo Rizzuto is from the Middle Ages. Located on the Ionian side of Calabria, Capo Rizzuto is one of the main seaside resorts on the island with an offer of itineraries of rare beauty. The village stands on a promontory that extends over the sea characterized by the fascinating alternation of steep and wild cliffs, small coves and beaches of fine sand that goes from golden yellow to coral red.

About the village

in the historical center of the village of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, in Calabria, there are remnants of the fortified complex dating back to the sixteenth century of the Feudal Castle (in via S. Marco), erected in the medieval period was extended in 1549, by the feudatory Neapolitan Giovanni Antonio Rich; remains of quadrilateral towers speronate angular; relics of the walls of the perimetric cortina with pivellini; "clock", the door of the medieval village, surmounted by a tower of the clock back that divides the area ancient from the more modern.

In the locality of Le Castella, is located the famous fortification of sixteenth-century origin, protesa on a small peninsula on the sea. It was constructed in order to contrast the frequent invasions. Very important are the monumental quarries of blocks and rocchi column Greek Age (VI-III century a.C.) on Tip Cannon and in the area of the harbor. They were presumably extracts the rocchi of the columns of the Temple of Hera Lacinia, located on the promontory of Capo Colonna.

Capo Rizzuto is located on Jonico side of Calabria and is one of the main seaside resorts of Isola di Capo Rizzuto. It rises on a promontory that stretches on the sea, characterized by the fascinating alternation of craggy cliffs and wild, small coves and beaches of fine sand that goes from golden yellow to red coral adorned from the flourishing spontaneous vegetation characteristic of mediterranean vegetation; the colors of the sea vanish from the sky blue to emerald green whose depths are hosting the heritage of flora and fauna in the protected area offers visitors wonderful performances. A wonderful landscape so that it deserves the establishment of protected marine area of Capo Rizzuto that offers itineraries of rare beauty, a unique path between the charming and uncontaminated naturalistic heritage.

On the coast rises the "Torre Vecchia", a cylindrical tower, with massive creasing in stone ashlars, erected in the XVI century to the coast guard against barbaric incursions. The tower was guarded by a corporal and a soldier who had the task of monitoring day and night and indicate the presence of suspected ships with special signals: smoke during the day and the bonfire night. The access to the inside of the tower was by a rustic wooden drawbridge.

The Sanctuary of Madonna Greca is dedicated to the Patron Saint of the Island of Capo Rizzuto.
