Baramati constituency, home turf of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, is gearing up for a high-stakes political showdown, with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) nominating Sunetra Pawar, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, as its candidate for the upcoming elections. This decision sets the stage for a compelling electoral battle, as Sunetra Pawar prepares to contest against her sister-in-law and Sharad Pawar’s daughter, Supriya Sule.
Speaking to reporter in Marathi, 60-year-old Sunetra, said that it was a “lucky day” for her.
“I thank Narendra Modiji, Amit Shah, and all leaders of Mahayuti (Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP) for considering me capable of fighting the election,” Sunetra Pawar said.
“Voters have taken the fight in their hands,” she said when asked about facing off with Sule.
The Maharashtra NCP unit president, Sunil Tatkare, recently announced the candidature of Sunetra Pawar for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This announcement comes shortly after the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) revealed its initial list of five candidates for the Maharashtra.
Tatkare asserted that the contest in Baramati revolves around ideology and principles rather than familial ties. With Sunetra Pawar, a newcomer to electoral politics, entering the fray, Baramati is poised to witness a unique battle – a Pawar versus Pawar confrontation, following the party’s split in 1999.
The focal point of the electoral clash lies between Ajit Pawar, who aligned with the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government last July, and his uncle Sharad Pawar, an experienced and seasoned politician.
The Baramati Lok Sabha constituency comprises six assembly segments – Baramati town, Indapur, Daund, Purandar, Bhor, and Khadakwasla.
