You can buy Robert Frost's ancestral home in Eliot, Maine, at online auction
ELIOT, Maine — The Frost Garrison and House on Frost Hill is being sold in an online auction.
Originally built and occupied by Col. John Frost in the early 1700s, this homestead includes a 2.5-story Colonial built in 1732. American poet Robert Frost was a descendant of the family who built this property and is reported to have visited family members at the home often.
Also on the property are a timber-framed Powder House built in 1734 and the two-story Garrison built in 1738.
The Garrison was built as a stronghold to protect not only family and neighbors, but livestock as well from Native American attacks. The stout structure was constructed of hand-hewn timbers measuring as much as 18-inches-tall by 8-inches-wide and up to 40-feet-long.
The garrison is the only known 18th century set of buildings in the United States erected strictly as a fortress against Indian attacks by a family, according to the Eliot Historical Society's website.
