SE7890 : Cawthorn Roman Camps
taken 6 years ago, 3 km from Cropton, North Yorkshire, England
Cawthorn Camp (sometimes spelled 'Cawthorne') is a Roman site in north-east England, about 4 miles (6 km) north of Pickering, North Yorkshire.
The monument includes the well preserved earthwork remains of two Roman forts (A and D), one of which (A) has an attached annexe (B), a Roman camp built to an unusual plan (C) and a section of medieval trackway (Porter Gate). It is situated on the crest of a gentle south-facing slope at the northern rim of the Vale of Pickering and immediately south of a steep slope known as Cawthorn Banks.
The works date from the late 1st/early 2nd century AD. It had been suggested that they were built for practice rather than for actual military use. Recent re-evaluation of the evidence suggests that permanent occupation of the two main forts is more likely.
Archaeological investigation has found indications of pre-Roman activity at the site, and also traces of later sunken dwellings (Grubenhäuser).
The site was acquired by the North York Moors National Park in 1983.
