The old west is alive and well in Ennis, Montana. A tradition of supplying local ranchers and travelers that began during the western expansion and Gold Rush of 1863 continues today. But this is no ordinary small Western town. Our Main Street is host to excellent restaurants, colorful western bars, shops and galleries. Fishermen can find the latest "hot fly" and get information on current area river conditions at one of our tackle shops.
Ennis also boasts an amazing display of outdoor sculptures from noted western artists including Dave Lemon, Jim Dolan and others. Galleries feature jewelry, baskets, gourds, prints and original oil and watercolors. Ennis can provide all the necessities for visitors including a great local butcher shop, full service grocery store, laundry, ATM's and service stations. Heck, we even have gourmet coffee!
Fishing for Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout in the famed Madison River is just one great reason to stay in Ennis for a few days. Along with fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting or rafting, vacationers use Ennis as "home base" for discovering dramatic Western history in Virginia City, exploring the Lewis & Clark Caverns, or spending a day in Yellowstone National Park.
In early July, Ennis has a competition rodeo with real cowboys and cowgirls, a classic car show, and a famous 4th of July parade. Reserved rodeo seating is available through the local chamber of commerce.
In mid October on the Friday before rifle hunting season opens, Ennis has its annual Hunter's Feed and cooking contest featuring wild game dishes the public can sample for free up and down Main Street. Past offerings have included antelope chili, venison meatballs, moose meatballs, elk fajitas, elk spaghetti, elk chili, elk stuffing with gravy, elk sausage, elk burgers, and elk carne asada.
On March 17 each year, every business in town decorates and has special events to celebrate the birthday of the town's founder, William Ennis.
Ennis, MT is surrounded by a panorama of snowy mountain peaks year round. Situated right on the Madison River, the town boasts a population of 1,000 people but 11,000,000 trout. There is river fishing access right in town at Ennis State Park. Ennis Lake is 7.5 miles away for swimming and boating in summer. In winter, come for the breathtaking snowy landscape and snow mobile riding. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) is just a 90 minute drive away.
