In the tradition of renewal rituals, the performance When We Gather invokes ancestral beings and knowledge to bring benevolence and vitality into the space of HKW. Cuban artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons asks what needs to be given up in order to accommodate a culture rooted in peace, hope, and togetherness. With Baba Murah, practitioners of the local Candomblé house, the Afro-Brazilian cultural forum, a Cuban Santería priest, and Bata drummer Rasiel Almanza Cairo, they summon, in a procession accompanied by chants and other invocations, orishas (divine forces of nature for the Yoruba) and other good energies to inhabit the space in support of this process. For When We Gather, the artists invite the public to come with prayers of renewal, both ahead of and during the performance.
