Paris: Le Haut-Marais

The Haut-Marais neighbourhood in the third arrondissement, where you'll find foodie nirvana and many much-loved coffee shops, is officially trendy. It is just one of the four cool areas of Paris you may not know about

With its beautiful tree-lined squares, world-class museums and busy shops, the Marais is firmly on the tourist trail. However, away from the heaving streets of St Paul and Place des Vosges, the Haut-Marais has retained its distinctive French flair. North of Rue de la Perle all the way up to République, the atmosphere changes and becomes less guide book, more glamorous Parisian with a philosophy book.

This area has also become a foodie haven - there's seventeenth-century food market Le Marché des Enfants Rouges, La Jeune Rue, which is an entire street dedicated to gastronomic delights, while Café Charlot, Tartes Kluger, Chez Omar and Boot Café are some of the most-loved spots in the city.

Try The Little Red Door and Mexican restaurant Candelaria for cocktails and Hotel du Petit Moulin for the most glamorous bedroom imaginable.
