Bingham County is looking for two residents to serve on its Planning and Zoning Commission, to replace members whose terms are ending this month.
There are nine members of the Planning and Zoning Commission, so they currently have enough people to continue to operate, however, it will lose representation and perspective from particular areas of the county until the two vacancies are filled.
Planning and Zoning Commission members have two kinds of duties: hearing and ruling on specific development applications and revising and adding to the county’s development code.
As to specific applications, they need to be able to patiently listen to passionate pleas and then be able to see past the emotions to consider the underlying concerns about proposed land use applications. They also need to be able to make code-backed rulings and recommendations despite public outcries of disagreement, even if they come from your family or neighbor. In short, they fairly and consistently enforce current development codes.
Planning and Zoning Commission members also hold a powerful position in shaping the future of the county.
They are actively involved in refining zoning ordinances and development standards, drafting area of impact agreements with the cities, and in amending and enforcing the County’s vision of the future as expressed in the Comprehensive Plan. How should the county manage growth? New industries? Housing needs? Open spaces?
Interested? There are some qualifications and commitments to consider. First, Bingham County Code requires Planning and Zoning Commission members must have resided in the county for at least the two years immediately before being appointed.
Secondly, the County Commissioners, in order to keep a diverse representation of the whole county, are only considering applicants from the Congressional District 1 for these vacancies. This means only people living within the city limits of Shelley or in the county around Firth but not within city limits will be considered.
If you wonder if you qualify, there are maps on the planning page of the county’s website, or you can ask Planning and Development Director Tiffany Olsen via phone 208-782-3177 or email your question to her at tolsen@binghamid.gov.
Planning and Zoning Commission members serve for three years and can be re-appointed for a second three-year term, if desired. They have monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of the month that start at 7 p.m. There may also be occasional work meetings.
If this sounds like a way you want to contribute and influence the future of the county, and you qualify, there is an application online or available at the Planning and Development Department at 490 North Maple, Suite A, in Blackfoot. The applications will be presented to the County Commissioners, who will make the final decisions and appointments.
