The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Tuesday approved the recommendations of the Amitabh Kant committee, clearing the way to restart the registry of flats in the state, in a move that could bring relief to thousands of homebuyers awaiting the registration of their flats.

A large number of homebuyers who have already taken possession of their flats are living without registering their flats as the builders have not cleared the dues of the government authorities. The Amitabh Kant committee was formed to find ways to restart the process of registering flats.

The Amitabh Kant committee recommended giving a 30-40 per cent rebate to the builders so that they could pay off all their dues, paving the way for flat registry.

Confirming the development, Dhirendra Singh, MLA from Jewar assembly constituency of Greater Noida, said, "Many former governments are responsible for the plight of homebuyers, but the current government is taking all steps possible to ensure that the homebuyers get the registry of their flats".

The move is also expected to benefit numerous people who are awaiting possession of their flats.

Representatives of flat owners, who were members of the Amitabh Kant committee, have also indicated that the registry process may restart soon.

"The recommendations are approved, and the builders have got rebates on their dues during the period of Covid. It will now be easier for the builders to clear their dues, and the registry process will restart," Abhishek Kumar, president of the New Era Flat Owners Welfare Association (Nefowa), said.
