Flu cancels school in Fernwood, ID

With dozens of sick students and faculty, UpRiver Elementary School closed Wednesday.

Joe Kren, superintendent of the St. Maries school district, said about 20 students and four faculty members were sick with the flu or similar symptoms.

The school also had a half day Tuesday.

Brinda Baird's two youngest children attend the school.

"I have an appointment for my daughter later this afternoon, so yes I'm having them checked out. Anyone that has a fever just shouldn't go to school just keep your kids home," said Brinda Baird.

Tuesday night the school district had their custodians do a deep cleaning of all surfaces. Baird said she'll only send her kids back to UpRiver School once they're feeling better.

"They can only miss so many days of school. So, you send your kid to school with other kids being sick and you risk your kids being sick," said Baird.

The school is expected to reopen Thursday, but the school will be closed again on Friday to mark the end of the semester.
