'So thrilled and overjoyed' Laois Council CEO congratulates Abbeyleix

Laois County Council CEO John Mulholland has expressed delight at Abbeyleix Tidy Towns winning the top title in Ireland for 2023.

"I’m celebrating what is an outstanding achievement by a group of very dedicated and ambitious people from Abbeyleix.

"I am so thrilled and overjoyed for the many volunteers in the Abbeyleix Tidy Towns who over many years and decades have put such hard work, graft and imagination into making Abbeyleix one of Ireland’s finest small towns.

"So now we know officially that Abbeyleix is rightly positioned on top of the ladder for 2023, a town and a group of people richly deserving of the National Gold Medal Award.

"We in Laois County Council have been happy to act in collaboration with local volunteers over many years and today we see the culmination of that work in the best way possible," Mr Mulholland said.

Abbeyleix won a raft of awards at the 2023 event in Croke Park. They are Ireland's Tidiest Town, Ireland's Tidiest Small Town, Regional Winner, County Winner, they won their eighth consecutive Gold Medal and also won a Highly Commended for their All Ireland Pollinator Plan. 

Elsewhere in Laois, Portlaoise also won a Gold Medal, Durrow won a Highly Commended award, and Ballinakill won the Best Endeavour Award.
