Attention all chilli lovers! 🌶️🔥 Did you know that the dry red chilli seeds cultivated in the Chilli zone of Tamilnadu called as Sattur Sampa are mostly K2 variety released by TNAU 50 years ago. These chillies have a mid-color value and mild pungency, making them perfect for dry chilli powdering and crushed chilli. Traditionally, farmers in this area utilize last season's harvest for extracting seeds and generally avoid buying. However, due to the high quality of IPM grade farmers in this region, they fetched excellent remuneration last season, even though the yield was below 10 qtl per acre. We're excited to share that the interest and search by farmers towards high-yielding, bright-colored chilli varieties are now higher. Farmers are traveling long distances to try new chilli hybrid seedlings from our farm. As farmers in this region are now well-utilizing the largest chilli seedling nursery, we're confident that chilli processors can source high-color and high-pungent chilli material for their needs from the largest Chilli IPM area of India. I had the opportunity of meeting Dr. Gautam Saha-Vice Chancellor at the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya [BCKV], Kalyani, West Bengal. It was a great experience where we were able to discuss the regarding to create domestic and global demand and to provide nutritional food to the people, Government of India had proposed to the United Nations for declaring 2023 as International Year of Millets. Millets are the staple crops of the semiarid tropics, as other food crops cannot be cultivated in that terrain due to low rainfall and poor soil fertility. They also have higher nutrient content compared to major cereal crops and ensure food and nutrition security. Further, millets are tolerant to drought and other extreme weather conditions and hence are endemic to such geographies. Millets are small-grained, annual, warm-weather cereals belonging to the grass family. Jowar (Sorghum), Bajra (Pearl Millet) and Ragi (Finger millet) are the important millets cultivated in India. Small Millets such as Proso (Cheena), Kodo (Kodra, Arikelu), Fox tail (Kangni/Korra), Barnyard (Varai, Sawa), Little millet (Kutki) are also grown in our country.
