Last week (July 27-30), I had the opportunity to be one of the 30 participants in the Visayas regional in-person sessions of "REalTalk: A Movement Building Workshop on Renewable Energy" at Ormoc City, Leyte. REalTalk, which is a training program organized by The Climate Reality Project Philippines in partnership with AktivAsia Philippines, aims to raise energy literacy and build a movement on just transition to renewable energy (RE). I have met a lot of like-minded individuals from different walks of life. Learning from each other's ideas and experiences made the discussions and campaigns more engaging and meaningful as we share one common goal: a just transition to RE (in the country). As computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee once said: "We need diversity of thought in the world to face new challenges." The workshop concluded with a site visit at the Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant (TGPP), which is a registered RE supplier under Green Core Geothermal Inc. Prior to the in-person REalTalk training, a 3-day virtual session was held via Zoom. From there, I learned about the country's energy sector, power mix, and policies; the different components of our electricity bill and the factors contributing to high power costs; the policies and programs, and different types of renewable energy (RE) in the Philippines; and the opportunities and benefits of switching to GEOP. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Here are a few things that I wanted to highlight from the workshop: - Majority of the country's power generation are made up of imported fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas). The vulnerability of fossil fuels to global market price volatility, high importation costs, and continuing power outages add to the burden of the generation expenses that consumers have to bear. - Getting power from RE sources could reduce electricity rates by 30%. - Pursuant to Republic Act No. 9513 of 2008 or the RE Act, GEOP was created as a mechanism to empower eligible consumers to source 100% power from RE. - The good news is: Consumers do NOT need to install their own RE systems (i.e., solar PVs). This means that they do not need to spend huge capital cost to switch to green energy sources. - Entities such as Globe Telecom and Arthaland's Arya Residences have reduced their electricity cost by at least 10% since switching to RE through GEOP. - With enough savings that they could generate through GEOP, both private and public entities such as local government units (LGUs) and colleges/universities can utilize this program as a stepping stone towards other sustainable projects. - The Climate Reality Project Philippines continues to engage with Pasig City and Ormoc City to be the first LGUs to participate in GEOP. Important note: Switching from fossil fuels to renewables could save a lot more than just on our electricity bills. It is crucial for climate action. #MurangKuryente #LeadOnClimate #ClimateRealityPH

Floating Solar Market Will Grow at CAGR of 29.80% By 2032: The global floating solar market size was exhibited at USD 4 billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach around USD 54.09 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 29.80% from 2023 to 2032. Market Overview Floating solar panels, also known as floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems, represent an innovative method of harnessing solar energy by installing solar panels on the surface of bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, reservoirs, canals, and irrigation ponds. With an increasing number of countries pledging to achieve competitive solar and broader renewable energy targets, adopting FPV becomes pivotal in achieving these ambitious goals. A notable trend in the global market is the rise of solar-tracking floating panels, which are expected to grow in value. Floating solar panels are gaining traction as a cost-effective alternative to land-based photovoltaic systems, as the presence of water in the systems enhances the efficiency of solar modules, which is particularly valuable in hot climates and presents opportunities globally. They play a crucial role in the ongoing energy transition by offering a viable solution for solar markets encountering challenges with traditional photovoltaic (PV) applications. Also, installing floating solar panels in a reservoir can decrease annual water evaporation losses. A recent study in the International Journal for Innovative Research in Science and Technology highlighted the effectiveness of floating solar photovoltaics in large reservoirs. The system has the potential to significantly decrease evaporation losses by up to 70%, simultaneously providing shade to shield the water from direct sunlight. Companies in the floating solar industry express optimism regarding the global expansion of large-scale projects. They are mainly focused on utility-scale floating solar plants, anticipating a significant impact on reducing fossil fuel imports worldwide and saving countries money in foreign currencies. However, the success of floating solar plants hinges on meticulous site selection. Businesses should thoroughly understand the geography of the waterbed to ensure suitability for anchoring floats. Anchoring is essential to mitigate the risk of solar islands colliding with banks or being displaced during storms by evenly distributing the loads caused by wind and waves. https://lnkd.in/gpbg-Txp

Interested in the energy industry trends in #SouthEastAsia?: please see Petteri’s summary. Great to see the growing team both in #engineering as well as in #ManagementConsulting. Quite a few of the projects mentioned play to the strength if AFRY, namely the seemless collaboration of engineering and consulting. Please reach out to Petteri Harkki for our technical services and to Matt Heling for market analysis and to Shivesh Tyagi for strategy and transaction advisory in the region. #MakingFuture
With the energy transition progressing strongly in Asia Pacific, I thought that it is again good time to highlight some of the developments that we are observing in the region: · Overall, the market is again growing nicely. The AFRY team in the region is currently busier than we have been for the last 5 years, with several new contracts being signed and a number of new projects starting. · A lot of solar PV projects continue to be developed in the region, several of them GW-scale. Floating solar especially is popular, and AFRY is currently supporting several of those developments, including construction of a large floating solar project in Thailand. · Offshore wind sector, while progressing slower in the region than hoped for, offers a good promise in a number of countries in the region. AFRY has in the last few months been involved in offshore wind projects in six countries in the APAC region. · Decarbonisation and net-zero studies for whole countries, power generation companies and industries are becoming more common. AFRY is currently preparing a major decarbonisation study for one of the largest power utilities in the region on how to decarbonise their power generating assets. · Green hydrogen project study boom has arrived also in SEA. AFRY has already prepared a number of studies in SEA on the technical concepts and feasibility of domestic and export green hydrogen schemes. · With the reduction of LNG market prices, many new LNG to Power projects are again been developed. As AFRY is one of the very few technical consultancies in the region who can cover both the LNG terminal and the power plant, we have been very successful in getting new projects and have strongly expanded our LNG and Green Fuels team in the region. · CCS studies have already started in the region. AFRY is currently preparing studies to install carbon capture facilities for one existing coal-fired power plant and one gas-fired power plant in the region. In 2023, AFRY have established new power sector consulting offices in Melbourne and Singapore. We are also busy expanding our team in Taiwan, with mobilisation of some 10 new people scheduled for the upcoming new power projects there. We also continue to strongly expand our environmental and social consulting team, and have already this year doubled the size of our E&S team in the region. As the market is very promising, AFRY continues its strong recruitment drive to hire senior and junior professionals for our renewable energy and power sector projects across the region. We have so far already hired over 60 new energy sector professionals this year in the APAC region, and we currently have many job advertisements out there for new candidates. We are especially interested in talking with senior energy sector professionals in the region. If interested, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly to discuss available opportunities or to just have a chat about the markets.
