The second organization we donated school supplies to was Crossroads for Women - Albuquerque, NM. This Albuquerque-based nonprofit organization provides housing and therapeutic services to empower New Mexico women emerging from incarceration. We held our annual “Build a Backpack” event where our employees help fill backpacks with various school supplies for elementary, middle school, and high school age students. This year, we even made a race out of it to see who could “build” a backpack the fastest! To learn more about Crossroads for Women and their mission, click here: https://lnkd.in/grGJBv3Z

I'm over the moon to announce that Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs ("WLC") has received a $900,000 gift from MacKenzie Scott! This is the single largest donation in WLC’s 55-year-old history. Situated in the nation’s capital, WLC is on the cutting edge of #civilrights battles that affect communities across the country. Our key focus areas include #educationequity, #disabilityjustice, #fairhousing, #workersrights, #immigrantrights and criminal legal system reform. We celebrate MacKenzie Scott’s recognition of #civilrights litigation as an essential tool in the fight for #racialequity. With this transformational gift, we will deepen our partnerships with low-income communities of color to advance #racialjustice. Together, we will strive to dismantle systems of racial oppression and to pursue lasting change in the Washington, DC region and the nation. The gift coincides with the launch of our #strategicplanning process. WLC will leverage this gift to raise another $1 million dollars in 2024 to: * Make fair housing a reality by preserving affordable housing, fighting for safe habitable housing, and opening doors to housing for returning citizens * Promote economic justice by fighting for education equity for students with disabilities, winning back stolen wages for workers subjected to wage theft, protecting workers subjected to harassment or discrimination * Reform our criminal legal system by ending police brutality, halting abusive prison practices, promoting decarceration, and supporting reentry for returning citizens Whether we’re running #workersrights clinics or representing prisoners subjected to abuse or suing white supremacists for attacking a Black church – the WLC uses every tool in the toolbox to eradicate systemic racial oppression. Our mission is to create a more just, inclusive, and equitable society. And our mission has never felt more urgent – as we gear up for a monumental election year in 2024, for Washington, DC, and the nation.
Exciting News! The Washington Lawyers’ Committee receives a historic $900K gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott through Yield Giving. This monumental donation marks a new chapter in our 55-year history, empowering us to deepen our racial justice work across Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. Let's make lasting change together! "What is critical for donors and funders to know is that because of their flexibility, 501(c)(4)s are a key strategy for Black-led movements. They keep vital community building work going year-round, but often face extreme dry spells in resources outside of tokenism and last-minute flow of resources during election season to turn out Black voters. Might we envision a radical shift where Black-led advocacy groups are on par in their funding with a 501(c)(4) giant like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)?"
In a commentary for Philanthropy News Digest, Tides Advocacy CEO Romilda (Romy) Avila writes: "All across the country, Black abolitionists, feminists, and progressives are pushing philanthropy to reimagine what a multi-racial and reflective democracy looks like. We are calling on private foundations, community foundations, public charities, individual donors, LLCs, and donor networks to take a step forward for Black liberation."
