A "hidden gem" nestled on the UK coast has been praised as something out of a fairytale.

Hope Cove is a small seaside village that lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just five miles from Salcombe. Once a thriving fishing port, Hope Cove was notorious for smuggling until the Earl of Devon built himself a holiday home there in the 1890s in a successful bid to encourage tourism.

It lies across two different sandy beaches, Harbour Beach and Mouthwell Sands. Both beaches are popular during the summer with visitors and locals alike taking to the water for kayaking, swimming and sailing.

Harbour Beach is characterised by a row of picturesque fishermen's cottages, while Mouthwell Sands is backed by cliffs and supervised by lifeguards. The water quality is designated as excellent and was named as one of the 2022 Marine Conservation Society Recommended beaches.

A BuzzFeed article titled '18 Places In The UK That Straight Up Belong In A Fairytale' listed Hope Cove in its number three spot, adding: "Thatched roofs are a fairytale staple, right? Head to the old fishing village of Hope Cove where there are more than a few. The village sits across two beaches and is within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it is safe to say that it is full of Mother Nature's finest creations."

Hope Cove also went viral last year thanks to a TikTok account dedicated to "hidden gems" around the UK. The video's caption praised the village saying the "water looks tropical" and "the post office sells great pasties". The clip earned more than 5,000 likes, with one user commenting: “It's a lovely area. I have been a few times” Another said: “I go there every year, my fave place” A third added: “I’ve been there, it is a lovely place”.

Within the nearby villages you can see an array of idyllic thatched cottages, Devon Live reports. With coastal walks and footpaths heading west to Salcombe, or north towards South Milton and Bantham beach, you will be greeted by tall cliffs, blue bays and gorgeous wildlife.

Looking to the west you'll spot Burgh Island and its famous art deco hotel, once frequented by the likes of Agatha Christie and noel Coward. The island is cut off at low tide and can only be accessed by a one-of-a-kind sea tractor which can be seen riding back and forth through the waves.
