Luxulyan
The parish of Luxulyan is perched on the eastern
fringe of the china clay area in mid Cornwall. It has Lanivet to the
north, Lanlivery to the east, Tywardreath and St Blazey to the
south, and Treverbyn and Roche to the west. Although the parish
church’s dedication, certainly since at least 1412, is to Saints
Ciricius & Julitta, the origin of the name of parish and village is
said to be Loc (holy place) + Sulien, the saint, (one of Samson’s
disciples) who is said to have accompanied him on his journey from
Wales to Brittany where Samson founded the Abbey of Dol. And of
course the little church at Golant, dedicated to St Sampson, is a
short distance away. In about 1150 the church, which was attached to
the manor of what is now called Bodigga, was given to Tywardreath
Priory and became a chapelry to Lanlivery - however it had achieved
parochial status by at least 1497. Nothing now remains of the Norman
church, save the font, and the present church of chancel, nave,
north and south aisles, south porch and west tower is essentially
15th century. The easiest approach from the adjacent road which
leads to Lanlivery is by the lych-gate in the south west corner of
the churchyard, by the side of which is the old wheel-headed wayside
cross, known as the ‘Three Stiles Cross’. It was discovered by the
Rev. Grylls (vicar at Luxulyan for 40 years from 1813) serving as a
gatepost, and originally moved to the vicarage garden, and later to
its present position. The pathway leads past the tower, constructed
of local granite, and it is only by pausing and looking up that one
realizes the sheer size of the ashlar blocks, and it is impossible
not to admire the skill of the medieval builders having to cope with
the size and weight of the blocks without the benefit of any
labour-saving devices. The porch is castellated, again built of the
massive ashlar blocks, and the hood-mould over the outer doorway has
stops carved as human heads. Entering the church itself, it becomes
clear that it consists of chancel and nave under one roof, north and
south aisles, each under a separate roof, with of course the south
porch and western tower already seen – all constructed in the 15th
century. At the west end of the nave stands the Norman font, a
magnificent example of the ‘Bodmin-school’ with well-carved palmette
and mythical creatures – one of the faces bearing two creatures that
have an uncanny resemblance to grinning Cheshire cats! The stained
glass east window in the chancel, depicting local saints and
characters from the Old Testament, was erected in 1906 in memory of
the celebrated local architect Sylvanus Trevail, who was responsible
for designing numerous well-known buildings in Cornwall – among them
the Headland Hotel at Newquay, King Arthur’s Castle Hotel at
Tintagel, as well as numerous schools throughout the Duchy. The
intricately carved lectern, on a pyramid-shaped base, is the work of
Canon Rashleigh, vicar at Luxulyan between 1873 and 1891. The north
and south aisles still have their 15th century waggon roofs,
although that in the nave and chancel was renewed during a
restoration in 1883. There is a fine baroque monument to Joseph
Carveth, vicar of the parish until his death in 1728, complete with
a bat-winged skull on its apron, and in the south aisle is a
Jacobean chair, the back of which is dated 1623. The back is reputed
to have come from the interior of a sailing ship, and the
descriptive label comments amusingly that “by the symmetry of some
of the carving it would appear to have been done after the rum
ration, or when the sea was quite rough”! On the wall of the south
aisle is a detailed slate memorial from the 18th century to members
of the Eudy family – parents and no less than 5 of their children -
and on the same wall are plaques commemorating the men of the parish
who lost their lives in both World Wars. There is a surprisingly
extensive graveyard, mainly to the north of the church, well
sheltered by mature trees, giving tantalising glimpses of the church
at intervals. A little way up the road, outside the village Memorial
Hall, is a beautiful bench in memory of the war dead, and just below
the church is the holy well, complete with carved figure of its
dedicatee – St Cyor.
