SULTAN KUDARAT, Philippines — Authorities foiled on Wednesday an attempt to bomb the venue of the closing program for the Kalimudan Festival in Sultan Kudarat province.
The week-long festival is a yearly event of the provincial government of Sultan Kudarat.
Senior Superintendent Raul Supiter of the Sultan Kudarat provincial police said Thursday bomb disposal experts managed to deactivate an improvised explosive device found near vehicles parked along the entrance to the provincial capitol in Barangay Kalawag in Isulan.
Isulan is the capital town of Sultan Kudarat province.
The IED was fashioned from an explosive powder placed in a plastic container packed with bent nails and metal fragments with jagged edges.
The improvised bomb was discovered by passersby heading to the capitol grounds to watch the Kalimudan Festival culmination activities.
“It was fortunate that the IED was found, enabling us to have it defused by ordnance experts immediately,” Supiter said.
Supiter said personnel of the Isulan municipal police are still trying to determine who were behind the botched bombing.
Isulan is a short distance from Maguindanao in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao where military units and guerrillas of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front have killed more than 30 Islamic State-inspired militants in joint operations in the past 12 weeks.
The MILF and the government are bound by an interim truce, the 1997 Agreement on General Cessation of Hostilities, to cooperate in neutralizing criminals and terrorists in conflict flashpoint areas in the south.
Officials of 6th ID said they are convinced that sympathizers of militant groups whose camps in Maguindanao and in North Cotabato were taken over by soldiers in the past week are behind the attempted bombing.
