Zamboanga del Sur village chief hit by falling tree dies

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A barangay captain in Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur died after a tree fell on him on Friday.

Police said Jessue Sandima of Barangay Ecuan was on a motorcycle when a tree along the highway in Purok 3, Barangay Canipay Norte toppled and hit him in the head.

Sandima’s companion and the driver of the motorcycle, Dome Capangpangan, suffered serious injuries.

In Bulacan, the village chief of Barangay Mag-asawang Sapa in Sta. Maria town was wounded in a gun attack.

Julian Rosilla was in front of the barangay hall when one of two men on a motorcycle approached and shot the barangay captain twice, reports reaching Col. Relly Arnedo, Bulacan police director, showed.

Rosilla was taken to the Rogaciano Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was later transferred to the Bulacan Medical Center in Malolos.
