This anthology is very important historically as it allows us to view the reality and beauty of the Cuba of yesteryear during pre-revolutionary times. The Collection, acquired by my father and subsequently passed on to me consists of hundreds of original 4X5 negatives. These negatives were one of the few items that we were allowed to take when we left the island in 1962.

Images from this exclusive Collection have been exhibited in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada and in the Groningen Museum in the Netherlands.

About this image: Bohio 1956

The abundant Royal Palm is the accent of every vista in the Cuban countryside. This "bohio" on the outskirts of Havana is a typical example of the rural architecture. Derived from the original indigenous dwelling, the bohio is a humble dirt floor structure whose frame is typically made of the Royal Palm wood. The thatch roof is woven and overlaid with palm fronds. This photograph, particularly important historically, proudly displays 2 posters on the porch proclaiming "Batista es el Hombre" (Batista is the Man.) Refering to the Cuban president which was overthrown by Fidel Castro's revolution in 1959. The posters are clearly legible in the photograph.
