TACLOBAN CITY – Residents in five towns of Samar provinces continue to suffer from the impacts of widespread flooding brought by Typhoon Bising since Monday.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said there is still flooding in the towns of Catubig, Las Navas, and San Isidro in Northern Samar; Jipapad and Can-avid in Eastern Samar.

“Even as late as today some families remain in evacuation centers since there are still rains in some parts of Northern Samar, OCD Eastern Visayas regional director Lord Byron Torrecarion said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

At least 12,259 people were evacuated in Northern Samar while 6,314 individuals in Eastern Samar moved to safer grounds as the typhoon dumped heavy rains, inundating 66 low-lying communities in the two provinces.

“We are happy that despite flooding, there are no reported casualties in these two provinces due to prompt response of our local government units,” Torrecarion added.

The region recorded one death due to the typhoon -- a 79-year-old resident in San Isidro village, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte hit by an uprooted coconut tree late Sunday.

In San Jose, Northern Samar, still missing since April 16 was a 40-year-old man who ventured into the sea to pick livestock from a nearby islet with his three friends. His companions returned to their home on Sunday.

Flooding has rendered some road sections in Northern Samar and Biliran impassable, but as of Tuesday, only road section in Bigo village, Arteche, Eastern Samar remained closed due to high floodwater.

Motorists from Arteche have to take the alternate road in Lapinig, Northern Samar to get to the nearby town of Jipapad in Eastern Samar. (PNA)
