MANILA – Waterways in Caraga Region may overflow due to rain from the trough of Tropical Storm Maring (international name 'Kompasu').
"The trough may bring to Caraga heavy rainfall that can cause waterways there to overflow," Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hydrologist Richard Orendain said on Saturday.
Communities in the region must brace for flooding of nearby low-lying and poorly drained areas, he noted.
He said the trough already began bringing light rain to the region.
According to PAGASA, major Caraga waterways that may overflow are Surigao del Norte province's Surigao and Magallanes; Dinagat Islands' Malinao Inlet and Gaas Lulet; Agusan del Sur province's Ojot, Wawa, Libang, Maosam, Kasilan, Gibong, Adgaoan, Simulao, Kayonan and Andanan; Agusan del Norte province's Lake-Mainit-Tubay, Asiga, Agusan, Linugos and Cabadbaran as well as Surigao del Sur province's Cantillan, Toracan, Tandag, Tago, Hubo-Oteiza, Hinatuan and Bislig.
PAGASA located "Maring" at 820 km east of Virac municipality in Catanduanes province of Bicol Region as of 10 a.m. Saturday.
"Maring" is moving west-northwestwards at 15 kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 105 kph.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible this Saturday in Catanduanes, Dinagat Islands and Eastern Visayas, PAGASA said.
Light to moderate with at times heavy rainfall may occur over northern Palawan province, Occidental and Oriental Mindoro provinces as well as remaining areas of Bicol, Caraga and the Visayas.
Aside from flooding, PAGASA said rain-induced landslides may result from the expected rainfall.
PAGASA forecast "Maring" to further move over water while heading northwest towards northern Luzon. (PNA)
