Swimming baths (right) and workshop buildings (left) at the Salford Union cottage homes at Culcheth in Cheshire. Some girls in their school uniforms walk across the scene. The homes were set up in 1903 to house pauper children away from the workhouse. Each " cottage" held 30 children plus a house parent. The scheme included school and infirmary buildings.
