Casiguran, zealous in his duties towards his “flock”, visited the valley on the northern part of this territory wherein he found, on and near the shores an abundant growth of native plants called “Bacong”*. It was this missionary father who gave the name Bacong to this place after the name of these plants. To make the pronunciation easy and smooth, the g at the end was discarded by the Spaniards who came later. The name has been Bacong belongs to the lily family. The fiber is white with spots of blue at the pistil. The petals are long and bend downwards. One can hardly notice its fragrance, which is mild and sweet unless he is close to the flower itself. A separate missionary parish or pueblo was established here under the Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Antonio de San Francisco, its founder, as the first minister of the church. With the natives to supply both labor and materials, the first place of worship was constructed under the direction of the missionary father. The church was dedicated to the Ntra. Sra. De La Anunciacion, Bacon Became a Pueblo Civil In 1754, by virtue of a decree issued by the Spanish government through the governor of the province of Albay, Manuel Valenzuela, the Mision de Bacon was declared Pueblo Civil de Bacon under the province of Albay, with Juan Elias (later Dia) as its first gobernadorcillo.This gave Bacon its legal existence as a newly- born daughter of Albay, which was conceived by its founding as a missionary Parish on the • Bacon's patroness was Our Lady of the Annunciation, until Fray Gregorio Sta. Ana replaced it with Sta. Rita de Casia. In1853, however, Fray Remigio de Vera returned the Our Lady of the Annunciation, as patroness of the parish, up to the present time. • Bacon is the oldest municipality (pueblo civil) of the province . It was founded in 1754. It is also the nearest town to the capital town of Sorsogon, with a distance of only nine kilometers. The road connecting it is the oldest in the province. The Municipality of Bacon (now Bacon District, City of Sorsogon), as established by the Spanish government then, included under it's jurisdiction the barriors of Sta. Florentina , Batan and Cagraray Islands When Sorsogon became an independent province from Albay, Bacon lost to Albay, Rapu- Rapu, Batan and Cagraray Islands. Also, the barriors of Suwa and Cabit were lost to the Municipality of Manito, also in Albay. Rapu- Rapu became a municipality of Albay in 1901, while Prieto-Diaz was separated from Bacon 1904, to become an independent municipality. With the separation of Sorsogon from Albay, the boundaries separating them were moved from Balabagon to Suwa Dagos sa Magayon na Bacon MUNICIPAL HALL OF BACON Our Lady of Annunciation Parish BACON BAY WALK ORGULYO KAN BACON “Orgullo” – Spanish word means self-satisfaction and pride. This place is in the District of Bacon a former municipality but now because of it's merger to the municipality of Sorsogon, it's now part of the City of Sorsogon. Mt.Pulog and Lake Pulog Mt. Pulog in Bacon Sorsogon is Bicol's best hiking secret. This mountain is part of a mountain group known as the Pocdol Mountain range or Bacon - Manito Mountain range! The main attraction at the summit (babaw) is Pulog lake (danum); since both are called Pulog, it is useful to refer to them with the bracketed terms. It is almost perfectly round, and a traverse going to the lake is very possible – and manageable within a dayhike, especially if the weather is good. The trek to Lebanon Beach is not the
easiest. For those with wobbly knees, the descent is something short of torture. After all, one has to pick one’s way through boulders and a steep incline.
