A last gasp Jamie Brady Hynes goal saw St Mary’s Granard pip Longford Slashers to two Longford SFC points.

A dramatic game which saw five goals and fist flying at the end with Granard coming back to claim victory. Granard winning out 2-13 to 3-8.

The sides were evenly matched early on, Slashers playing with the wind and leading five points to three in the first-quarter.

Granard dragged themselves back into playing against the wind with an impressive Aaron Smyth goal. Smyth finding the net through a crowd of bodies.

Granard led 1-4 to six points at half-time What might have been tame in the first-half was far from it in the second.

Aaron Smyth opened the second-half scoring on 33 minutes with a fine Granard point, moving St Mary’s two points clear.

However, Slashers were right back in it moments later. Tadgh McNevin’s shot at goal from the 15 metre line was blocked well by the sprawling Dylan Corcoran.

The block, however deceived keeper Thomas Gallagher and found its way into the net.

Jamie Brady Hynes replied with a free to make it 1-6 a-piece. Darren Gallagher from play and another Brady Hynes free had two points clear on 38 minutes.

Again, however, Granard’s poor defensive cover was exposed on 41 minutes. Slashers hand passing the ball through the Granard defence for Cian O’Nuallain to find the net.

Michael Hynes fisted Granard’s equalising score six minutes later. Again Granard dominated. Darren Gallagher and Aaron Smyth kicking points from play.

Robbie Clarke’s 56th minute free may it a level game.

Slashers found their third goal 60 seconds later. Bad defending again leaving too much same and this time Andrew Dalton fired home. Slashers leading 3-7 to 1-11 with three minutes to play.

Darren Gallagher immediately worked an effort in on goal, Slashers managing to clear the ball off the line.

Darragh O’Connell added an eighth Slashers point on 58 minutes making it 3-8 to 1-11.

The fill-time whistle was greeted with nearly a full-on milee from both teams as tempers boiled over.

Goals change games

Then it came, the game changing equalising goal, as if from nothing. Jamie Brady Hynes unleashing a rocket from inside the 13-metre line to the back of the net. James Kiernan and Darren Gallagher sent over two injury time points as Granard won out 2-13 to 3-8. The win moved Granard to the top of group one with five points. Mostrim hold second place.

Elsewhere Mostrim scored another big win over Ballymahon, winning out 5-11 to 1-8.

While, in group two Rathcline stunned Abbeylara 2-15 to 10 points. Mullinalaghta currently top group two with five points.
