2. The Caraga Region was created through
Republic Act Number 7901 on February 25,
1995. The region is composed of five (5)
provinces: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur,
Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte and Surigao
del Sur; six (6) cities: Butuan,Cabadbaran,
Bayugan, Surigao,Tandag and Bislig ; sixty-
seven (67) municipalities and 1,308
barangays. Butuan City is the regional center.

The word Caraga originated from the Visayan word “Kalagan”:
“Kalag” meaning soul or people and “An” meaning land. The
“Kalagans have a long history of being brave and fearless.

11. On the northern part of Agusan del Norte, near the borders of
Misamis Oriental, is a blissful resort perched on a rocky shore

families. The resort has wide pools, an awesome man-made
pool on a cave, cottages perched on the stone cliffs, concrete
pathways to explore the area, and even interesting sculptures of

12. Balangay Shrine Museum is one of the
best tourist attractions in Agusan del Norte
where history geeks would love to visit. It
is a small open-air museum which houses
one out of the nine balangays, an old
wooden boat, discovered on 1970’s by the
local treasure hunters.
13. Butuan National Museum is another known museum in
Agusan del Norte which showcases the historical and
cultural collections found in the province. The items
inside the museum includes the parts of Balanghai or
Balangay which were accidentally discovered by the
locals. Further excavations done by the archaeologists
from the National Museum yielded more archaeological
finds.
14. Tagnote Falls is one of the known tourist
spots in Agusan del Norte favored by the
locals. The 20-foot high waterfall cascades
on a rock cliff down the 10 square meters
wide basin which is about 3-foot deep.
15. Sak-a Falls is another famous waterfall
found in Agusan del Norte. It is a 3-tier
waterfall with refreshing and crystal clear
waters surrounded by lush greenery. The
first waterfall basin is not an ideal site for
swimming since the waters most of the
time is too strong.
16. Mount Carmel View Deck and Park, formerly known as Marcos
Park, is one of the best sightseeing destinations in the province of
Agusan del Norte. It is a park located at the one of the highest peaks in
the province with an elevation of 810 meters above sea level. The top
offers fascinating views of rolling mountains covered with greens, the
vast sea and shorelines of Agusan del Norte and Caraga Region, hence it
is called as the “Show Window of Caraga“.

Agusan Marsh is one of the most significant
ecological wetlands and finest eco-tourism
destinations in the Philippines. The Agusan Marsh
is the largest in the Philippines found at the center
of the Agusan Basin in Mindanao.
22. Bega Falls
An enchanting waterfall in the hinterlands of Prosperidad which legend
says was a haven of beautiful women during the ancient days. Situated
in a 290-hectare locally declared protected area in the bosom of the 178-
hectare Ugnop Cave landscape forest reserve in upland Brgy. Mabuhay,
it is the centerpiece of the Bega River System comprising of 4 major
waterfalls and 12 miniature falls, most of which have been identified for
biodiversity research.
23. Gibong River
Prosperidad’s scenic river and potable water source which is ideal
for cruising and boating activities. From the river banks, visitors
can cruise along the river and be enthralled by the untouched
vegetation and limestone cliffs enroute to Gibong Recreation
Center, a camping and bird watching site in the woods. Adjacent it
is Binaba Falls, a cascade of clear water emanating from the
watershed.
24. Tugonan Falls
Tugonan is one of the many stunning falls
in the province. The name of the falls has
its origin from the word “Tugon,” meaning
a pledge or promise. It is located in
Barangay San Lorenzo in Prosperidad. The
vicinity is also lush in greenery.

spots in Agusan del Sur, a favored trekking
destination among the locals and foreign
mountaineers. Standing about 592 meters
