Biography

  • Earl Sweatshirt is a rapper who hails from Los Angeles, California, and is very much tearing it up on the hip-hop scene, being signed to Columbia Records, alongside his own label entitled, Tan Cressida. This kid does it all.

Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, who is better known as his pseudonym, Earl Sweatshirt, has had such a fruitful career up until the present, having being discovered by hip hop heavyweight, Tyler, The Creator, through MySpace. He went on to join Tyler’s rap group who go by the name “Odd Future”. Tyler took on his protégé Earl, and went on to produce his debut full-length album, which was released on March 31st 2010 as a free digital download.

Despite all of this success, his Mother, due to finding himself in trouble frequently, sent Earl to a private school in Samoa. He earned his stripes and a couple of academic years later, returned to LA, where he resumed his hip-hop career in full swing. He earned himself 50,000 followers on Twitter due to the release of a new song on his website entitled “Home”. 2012 was a big year for Earl Sweatshirt, as he was featured on the track “Super Rich Kids” from Frank Oceans’ debut album and he released his first solo single since his return from Samoa, entitled “Chum”. He also began work on his second studio album, “Doris”.

It is no surprise that Earl Sweatshirt has been nominated for the BET Hip Hop “Rookie of the Year” Award, and has made multiple TV Show appearances.

Live reviews

  • Earl Sweatshirt

I think everyone has that one artist who when you start talking about them your close friends all start to roll their eyes, because they know your level of obsession with their music and once you start talking you won't stop... for me that artist is without a doubt Earl Sweatshirt. If he releases a song, is featured on one, or simply endorses another artist I am the first to know. I have seen him in concert twice now since he has been back in the states, the first time driving all the way across Virginia for the show, the second time driving about 7 hours to North Carolina, and despite the damage to my gas tank and bank account I have absolutely zero regrets. He puts on an incredible show, usually featuring at least one of his DJs Lucas or Taco, and I have never been so content to get elbowed in the face/have my feet stomped on by strangers simply because I know it was all a product of our reaction to his music. His lyrics speak to my heart and his attitude live is one that not only makes me laugh but also keeps me enthralled the entire time he is one stage. I could continue to go on an on about his poetic talent, hilarious persona, and intelligent outlook on life-but I will just leave it at if you're not with Sweatshirt yet, get that way.

  • There are rap artists who you see live who perform behind a barrage of thick glasses and arrogant attitude and it feels almost like you could have watched this through a screen as there is no real atmosphere. Earl Sweatshirt is not one of these artists. Real name Thebe Neruda Kgositsile found fame in hip hop collective Odd Future alongside Frank Ocean and Tyler The Creator and through this collaboration he had a ready made fan base for his solo career.

Bounding onto stage with his hype man to the bass heavy rumblings of 'Kill', he instantly jumps to the front of the stage and encourages the audience to jump with him. Rapping his way through 'Blade' and '20 Wave Caps' he quickly has the audience in the palm of his hand. His DJ takes care of the technicalities whilst Earl focuses on what he does best, being a frontman.

Playing material mainly taken from debut album 'Doris', the audience rap along to favourites including 'Burgundy' and 'Hive' before the all-out party that is 'Orange Juice' closes a blistering live show by one of hip hop brightest showmen.

  • Homie and I had a blast. Earl is a true artist and good preformer. If you're going to a show be warned, a random mash pit may form at the front. Spend most of Remy's set fighting for a front row view only to end up in the danger zone. I felt bad cause I kept getting pushed into little girls and felt like they were getting hurt. But they tough. Also bring a j.Earl rolled up but didn't share lls

  • Absolutely life-changing. Such an emotional and powerful performance, seeing his expressions and reactions to his own songs and lyrics, he put all the songs I’ve been listening to of his for almost 6 years now into a perspective I’ve never experienced before. Na-Kel and BbyMutha were also perfect to open for such a show.

  • Solange was incredible and Flying Lotus in 3D was truly an experience. Earl Sweatshirt didn't show up .....! And we never got an explanation. But I wasn't even mad after the show since Solange's set was such a religious and beautiful performance.

  • The vibe was immensely amazing. He played a good mix of stuff from Doris, IDLSIDGO, SRS & a lot of new stuff too. After his set he danced around on stage to random songs his DJ was spinning, it was an overall good time.

  • High energy opening acts and show. It's never heard of M.I.K.E. or Liv.E, but they were great. Earl was pretty cut and dry. He came to perform and vibe, that's all. Venue staff was friendly and attentive.

  • Remy Banks was a great opener, the concert was hype enough but earl seemed kinda bored at times. Worth going to though, if you know his songs you'll have a good time.
