About Diptford

Perched on a hill in the heart of the South Hams, Diptford is a historic little village which overlooks the stunning River Avon. Surrounded by tumbling hills, it gives the sense of a real rural escape.

The tranquil village lies in the foothills of Dartmoor, home of mighty granite tors, free roaming ponies and spine-chilling myths and legends. Within a ten minute drive, you'll find yourself in Dartmoor National Park, surrounded by rugged open landscapes and ancient woodlands. Dartmoor is a haven for walkers, cyclist and horse riders, with endless track and trails to follow. Pack a picnic and head to Avon Dam reservoir, a short drive from Diptford. As well as a car park, toilets and lots of lunch spots, the path here is level, perfect for families with pushchairs and little legs.

Diptford is also well placed for exploring the quirky market town of Totnes. Famous for its weekly markets and bohemian culture, Totnes is a must-visit when on holiday in South Devon. Its historic streets are lined with wonky buildings, independent cafes and shops specialising in organic, ethical goods. Totnes is also home to the steam train at South Devon Railway and a Norman motte and bailey castle, guaranteed to put a smile on the kids' faces.

The A38 dual carriageway is only a five minute drive from Diptford, making it easy to reach the rest of the South Hams. Head to the lively market town of Ashburton on the edge of the moor to browse antique shops, artisan bakeries and delis, or visit the south coast's many beautiful beaches. The golden sands of Bigbury, Bantham and Thurlestone are all within a 30 minute drive from Diptford.

Holidays in Diptford offer the unique combination of easy access to Dartmoor and the lively towns of the South Hams but removed from the summer crowds, resulting in a truly relaxing retreat.
