A modern mountain cabin neighborhood in Ranchester WY

Sawtooth Model, Cabin 12

Steamboat Mountain Village provides a unique dwelling experience that empowers the lifestyle of individuals and small families. It’s a simpler way of life — with minimal maintenance, more privacy and security, in a relaxing, park-like environment with open green areas.

Aspire to a new way of living; inspired by old ways of life.

Living in Steamboat Mountain Village means:

  • A Throwback trend - this “pocket neighborhood concept” seems like a new trend, but its the way people have lived for centuries before modern subdivisions; where before, people clustered homes together intentionally for increased safety and shared responsibilities…

  • Friendly neighborhood — Expect to get to know a few of your neighbors on a personal level, where you may enjoy the fireside evening roasting marshmallows, or even ask your trusted neighbor to babysit your children. As Ross Chapin says on his website,

    • During the daily flow of life through this commons space, nearby neighbors offer ‘nodding hellos’, or stop for a chat on the porch. These casual conversations can eventually grow to caring relationships and a meaningful sense of community — all fostered by the simple fact of shared space.” And a little later in his article he states, “The fabric of social health in our society has been fraying, in part because many people lack networks of personal and social support…. Pocket neighborhoods can help mend a web of belonging, care and support.  Their protected setting encourages informal interaction among neighbors, laying the ground for caring relationships.”

  • More secure and private — The ingenuity of the pocket neighborhood concept provides a layered approach to personal space, starting from the public street to the narrowed entry to the community, the common walks and green spaces for the residents, and then to the individual fenced gardens that separate the common area and private porches. This layered approach provides a balance between community and privacy. Residents tend to feel safer than in a conventional subdivision or apartment.

  • Rewarding lifestyle - Many are beginning to rethink what is required from their homes, and how their home helps grow their character and possibilities. It turns out that as builders, by studying the ideas and concepts of what we build, the lifestyle in lower price homes can be significantly more rewarding than in a high priced community!

  • Minimal maintenance — Don’t worry about mowing or snow shoveling. The yards are all maintained by an HOA

The pocket neighborhood concept has been around for a long time, but was officially coined in 1995 by architect Ross Chapin when he designed and built the first contemporary pocket neighborhood in Langley Washington. The design concept of pocket neighborhoods naturally curates a more friendly place to live — where the homeowners tend to have more interaction, and get to know each other more than in conventional developments.

The Concept

It turns out that homeowners loved living in these neighborhoods and the pocket neighborhood concept quickly became more and more popular. Today pocket neighborhoods are common all over the country, but have not been introduced to the Sheridan/Ranchester area.

Objectives

  1. Create a close-knit, neighborly community

  2. Provide sturdy built homes for the budget minded folks that would work well for their situation.

  3. Provide a development that is master-plan designed for architectural interest, efficient layout and use, and low maintenance.

  4. Provide homes for those that desire low maintenance living. Especially those that may only live in the area for a portion of the year.

  5. Provide lower cost rental spaces for people that desire more privacy than apartment living
