CEDAR RAPIDS — This retirement didn’t last long.
West Liberty High School announced Thursday it has hired Jason Dumont to be its new varsity head football coach.
Dumont stepped down at Iowa City Regina in early November, saying he wanted to take a break from football. He was the Regals’ head coach the past three seasons, compiling a 23-7 record and helping Regina to the playoffs all three seasons.
He was defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Regina for 14 years, helping the Regals win seven state championships, including six in a row from 2010 to 2015.
“It is an honor to be named the head football coach at West Liberty High School,” Dumont said in news release from the school. “West Liberty has a rich football history and recent playoff success. Our goal will be to build on that tradition, develop our student-athletes into leaders, and compete for playoff berths and championships.
“I’m looking forward to getting started and becoming a part of the West Liberty community.”
West Liberty has been a playoff qualifier five of the last six seasons, including two quarterfinal appearances and a semifinal appearance. Dumont’s hire is pending school board approval.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Dumont to the West Liberty family,” West Liberty activities director Adam Loria said in the new release. “His passion for the game, combined with his leadership abilities, makes him the ideal coach to lead our football program.”
