The cool hotel guide: Grantley Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire

The impressive Grantley Hall in Ripon
The impressive Grantley Hall in Ripon

In a nutshell
Grantley Hall, a country house dating from the 17th century, has opened as an eye-poppingly luxurious hotel after an ambitious four-year restoration project costing £70 million. In a 38-acre park with a riverside setting, lake and beautiful gardens — including a listed Japanese garden — its elegant public rooms offer an opulent contemporary take on classic country-house style. New extensions feature an impressively equipped gym and spa that includes an 18m pool, an underwater treadmill, a “snow room” and a cryotherapy chamber.

What are the rooms like?
The 47 rooms and suites have original Georgian fireplaces, pale and pastel colour schemes and a restful atmosphere. Even the smallest have king-size beds and armchairs. Bathrooms offer Italian marble, cascade showers amd Lalique toiletries, and there are pillow menus and (for the ultra-fastidious) robe menus.

Which is the best room?
In the main part of the hall, Room 5 (a Grand Suite) and Room 3 (the Royal Suite, with mezzanine) overlook the gardens. The most spacious accommodation will be the as yet unfinished Presidential Suite in a new wing.

What’s the food like?
Guests are spoilt for choice, with four restaurants and the celebrity chef Shaun Rankin at the helm. Oak-panelled Fletchers has imaginatively treated mains from £18 to £27, plus more expensive grill dishes. Cod with crushed potatoes and monk’s beard (a sea vegetable) was rich in flavour and keen in texture.

Who goes there?
It’s early days, but Dales visitors and city escapees, plus grouse and pheasant shooters in season.
