Premariacco

The name Premariacco comes from the Latin word "Praedium Mari" which means Mario's properties; probably in the Roman period the area of Premariacco was owned by a noble man called Mario.

Although there are no remains of that period, Premariacco was probably inhabited by soldiers and Roman farmers who lived next to an ancient bridge on the river Natisone.

Some interesting remains of the Langobard age such as some tombs were discovered in the nearby village of Firmano.

During the Patriarchal age, Premariacco was the only village in Friuli free from that domination.

This was because the Patriarch Paolino came from Premariacco and the land owned by his family never paid the Deciam (a particular kind of tax).

The Parish of Premariacco was founded in 1182 and in 1192 the village became part of the Church of Aquileia.

In 1306 Premariacco and Orsaria were destroyed by the Counts of Gorizia and the following years Premariacco was strictly linked to Cividale.

Around the XI century, was born in Premariacco another Patriarch of Aquileia, Gerardo.
Other famous people was Fiore dei Liberi, born about 1300 (in a house that still exists). He was a fencing master swordsman and wrote a book on the art of dueling (signing as "Flower of the Free Premargiago") was almost certainly the inventor of the "Foil", a weapon that stands in his honor in the muncipal coat of arms.
