The Black Warrior River Council Boy Scouts of America's annual volunteer recognition banquet will feature keynote speaker John Croyle, former All-American defensive end under University of Alabama football coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant.

Croyle founded Big Oak Boys' Ranch in Gadsden shortly after graduating from UA in 1974. The ranch has provided nearly 2,000 youths with a home and education during the past 40 years.

Croyle will speak about the troubles youths face today and how parents can help.

The banquet will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at First Presbyterian Church, 900 Greensboro Ave. Tickets are $19 and must be reserved by Monday.

To reserve tickets, call the Leroy McAbee Scout Service Center at 205-554-1680.

The banquet will also recognize four scouting volunteers with the highest honor, the Silver Beaver, for their dedication to youth in and out of scouting and their commitment to community service.

Scout Benjamin Rose will also be honored for rescuing a drowning woman in July 2014.
