Well, take a gander at pretty much any of the performances of “Love Will Keep Us Together” on YouTube this morning, and you’ll find a whole range of expressions of distress in the comments (and several puns on the song's title, arguably in poor taste), mourning the marriage of the Captain and Toni Tennille, which is ending after almost 40 years.

The singing duo—who toured with the Beach Boys in the early ‘70s before breaking out on their own—released their first album in 1975, and were married a year earlier in 1974. Tennille, 73, filed for divorce from the Captain (real name: Daryl Dragon), 71, on January 16, according to ABC News. Dragon told TMZ yesterday that he had not been expecting it: “I don’t know why she filed,” he said. “I gotta figure it out for myself first.” He also revealed that the pair are still living together.

In 2010, Tennille wrote a blog post announcing that Dragon was suffering from a neurological condition similar to Parkinson’s that made it difficult for him to play music. “Some days he does pretty well,” she wrote, “Other days his playing is severely compromised.”
