Virudhachalam is located between Viluppuram and Kumbakonam. This Temple lies on the banks of River Manimutharu.  The Presiding Deity is Sri Virudhagireeswarar,  an incarnation of Lord Shiva.  Lord Virudhagireeswarar is in the form of a Swayambumurthy here. The Goddess here is Viruddhambikai or Balambikai.  The Temple is also known as Thirumudukundram or Pazhamalai.The 3 Saivite Saints Gnanasambandar,Thirunavukkarasar & Sundarar have praised this Temple in Thevaram.  The Temple is said to be around 2000 years old whereas the Vanni Tree itself is 1700 years old.  There are 5 Majestic Rajagopurams here. Girivalam or Circumambulating on Full Moon Days is Very Auspicious. There are sub shrines for Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga.  Lord Vinayaka is kept 18 Feet underground as Paadhala Vinayagar. The Chola Kings had a big hand in upbringing this Temple.  This Temple is considered as one of the biggest ever Saivite Temple in Tamil Nadu. Devotees who breathe their last here are considered to attain Moksha Direct.  A Visit to this Temple is equated to a visit to the Kasi Temple at Varanasi.
