Largely used as a climbing park, Peshastin Pinnacles also makes an ideal stop on Highway 2 to stretch your legs, or as a destination during a visit to Leavenworth, Wenatchee, Cashmere or Chelan. A short trail system offers a nice zigzag, moderately steep loop tour of the base of the climbing areas, and a picnic area makes for a great way to finish the visit off.
From the large graveled parking area, step through a small green garden gate and into the climbing area. The loop trail takes off immediately from here. Going left is the preferred route, since it allows you to climb with a view of the vineyard nearby, and once you reach the top, you can turn around to be surprised by the expansive view of the valley below.
Evidence of erosion is everywhere here, including on the main trails, despite signs all around the park pleading for you to stay on the established routes. Please respect them; until a crew can get in to fix them, the main trails are the most sustainable way to enjoy the park, particularly in this fragile area.
If you're having trouble determining which is the "true" trail, look for the widest route that leads into or out of a switchback. The true trail will also likely be the most gently graded.
The zigzagging route takes you to most of the climbing areas, first one just above a fence at the edge of a vineyard (please be sure to stay on State Parks property here). Bumping up the hill, there's a short terrace at the base of a north-facing climbing area. Keep heading up, and the trail will turn east, crossing a small gully and climbing a bit more before popping out to a lovely view of the Cashmere Valley over a small ridge.
To your left here is a tree growing straight out of the sandstone! Despite being so hardy, flora here is sensitive, and evidence of plants being affected by visitation here is much more apparent on this half of the hike.
Head downhill from the view from the ridgeline. The switchbacks here are in rough shape, but go slow and look hard for the real route. The trail sends you close to the east edge of the park before doubling back and heading down towards the parking area.
WTA Pro Tip: There is a bathroom here, but no potable water. Bring all you need for the day!
