Harvest Time
September already? Surely not! We only just seem to be enjoying some
summer sunshine—it can’t be due to change to autumn yet?! Maybe there will be
an ‘Indian summer’ and we will all be basking in warmth until October—fingers
crossed. The wet and damp weather has certainly had an effect on the garden,
with many plants late blooming, or even rotting on the stem, as my poor roses
seem to have done. Wildlife have been affected too, with a large drop in butterfly,
bee and wasp populations this summer. It may seem like a blessing to have had
so few wasps about, but it all has a knock on effect down the food chain. Spare a
thought too for the local farmers who have had to try and harvest between spells
of wet weather, I am sure they must be ready to move on from harvest season.
Speaking of harvest—as usual we have Harvest Festivals at both St.
James’ and the Methodist Chapel, further details are inside the magazine. These
are lovely community events, both a pleasure to behold and take part in, so do try
to join in with the festivals and suppers if you can.
If you have something you would like to share then please do get in touch.
Thanks to Tim Fothergill for this month’s cover—a very rural scene over the
back fields of Hockwold—a view which constantly reminds me just how lucky
we are to live here. Rather a view of hay bales than city streets any day!
Laura Sands—Editor
By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer.
PARISH COUNCIL
Tuesday 24 July 2012
Present: Mr T Gossage, Mrs T Sismey, Mrs D Barrett, Mrs M Eade,
Miss R Johns, Mrs L Arbour, Mr M Denney
Mr M Storey, Borough Councillor
Squadron Leader Neild RAF Lakenheath
One member of the public.
Apologies: Mrs P Raburn, Mr T Fothergill, and Mr A Lawrence Borough
Councillor.
This was a busy month for plans and documents relating to the running of the
Parish Council.
Squadron Leader Neild reported little change in activity from the base, he agreed
to look into a problem that had arisen recently with backed up traffic on the Hockwold
Road (B1112) at the entrance to Feltwell Base.
It was confirmed that the replacement tree for Cross Hill is now on order. Any
further donations would be welcome as these could be used to purchase a new seat to
replace the broken one.
Concerns were raised about the state of the footpaths in the village, as the weeds,
having been sprayed, are now standing dead and unsightly.
With the schools on holiday, the weather excelling itself and the gardens looking
at their best, the Council would like to wish everyone an enjoyable summer.
The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 11 September 2012 at
7.30 in the Methodist Chapel, South Street, Hockwold.
Maureen Eade – Acting Chairperson
HOCKWOLD CRICKET CLUB.
A VIEW FROM THE GROUNDSMAN’S HUT!!
I really cannot believe that by the time you read this article, our
League season will be over for another year. With the exception of some yet
to arrange friendly matches, that will be it. We seem to wait so long for the
cricket season to come around; then it’s over in no time at all!
The continuing poor weather has really destroyed our season, with
the Saturday XI missing 4 out of the last 7 matches. This means we have
dropped to fifth in our League table. With 1 match left we have played 15,
won 5, lost 5 and cancelled 5. Sunday’s we have played 13, won 5, lost 2
and cancelled 6.
Again, I have only a few matches to report on, but where we have
played there has been some interesting results. On Saturday’s, against
Fakenham we narrowly lost, chasing down 280 to win. We fell 4 runs short
with 286-7. Against Thornham we amassed the massive total of 380-9, in
our allotted 45 overs. 8 man Thornham could only manage 82 in reply. A
convincing win by 298 runs!! On Sunday’s, we beat Mundford by 99 runs
and then lost to Rocklands by 9 runs.
We have had some fantastic performances in these last 4 matches,
with Simon Groom highlighting with an amazing 168 against Thornham. Also
in that match, Carl Smith scored his ever first half century, batting at number
10. Roy Bland has continued to score runs with 117 against Mundford
and a 74 against Fakenham. Anthony Ruddick scored 61no. against Fakenham.
David Spencer picked up 4 wicket against Fakenham, while Bert Marlow
picked up 4 against Rocklands and Simon Groom 4 against Mundford.
Our new pavilion is moving on well, with the roof now finished. With
the scaffolding down you can really start to see the building at its best.
Work on the interior is progressing well, and with the windows due on site
shortly. This means the project will be watertight long before the Autumn/
Winter drought arrives!!
We are again hosting the West Norfolk Cricket League President’s
Match on Sunday 16 th . September. Starting at 1-00. Do come
along and watch what the finest cricketers in West Norfolk have to
offer! The bar will be open all afternoon and the BBQ will be on!
Wednesday evening practice sessions are now underway from 5.30. If
you are interested in getting involved, young of old, do come down or alternatively
give John a call on 827098.
Remember you can follow Hockwold CC by going onto our website:
From there you can link direct to the Club’s Facebook page.
RECIPE—Broad Bean Hummus
Well the garden is starting to look lovely, if not a little parched
at times, and the beans are starting to blossom, and so now is the time
for the first glut of produce, the broad beans.
Simply lightly boiled, smothered in butter and sitting beside
roast beef is one of my favourite incarnations of the broad bean, but
recently I have been attracted to using them in salads, mixed with potatoes
and a big dollop of mayonnaise, and as a type of hummus. This
last one is so simple and so tasty, try it,
you’ll love it!
Ingredients
200g shelled broad beans
50ml olive oil (extra virgin)
Zest and juice of one lemon
Half teaspoon sweet paprika
3 cloves of garlic
Sea salt and black pepper
1 Ciabatta bread
Method
Tip the beans into a large pan of boiling water, do not salt the
water as this can make the skins tough. Cook for 3 minutes.
Drain the beans, then plunge them into cold water to stop them
cooking.
Squeeze the juice out of the lemon and grate the zest.
Put 4 teaspoons of the olive oil in a pan and heat gently, then
add the chopped garlic, cook very gently for 4 minutes until the garlic
has infused into the oil and the garlic has softened.
Place the beans in a food processor and whiz up to a paste, then
trickle in the garlic oil, the lemon juice, the zest and a further 15ml of
the olive oil, plus the half teaspoon of sweet paprika, sea salt and black
pepper. Whiz again, then spoon out into a serving bowl, and garnish
with a little of the olive oil.
Toast the sliced ciabatta, then use as a marvellous carriage for
the delicious broad bean hummus.
Enjoy!
Whatever The Weather
As I write in mid-July, it is supposed to be summer. Well, you could have
fooled me! It seems that it hasn’t stopped raining for months! Although it is easy
for us to grumble, it is sometimes easy to forget that our local wildlife has to grin
and bear it.
The weather has made things difficult this year. Perhaps the most extreme
example has been over on the Ouse Washes. Spring flooding has meant that hundreds
of pairs of ground nesting wading birds, such as redshanks, snipes and lapwings
have been flooded out. This must be heart breaking for reserve staff, who
have put so much effort into making the habitat perfect for them.
Slightly closer to home, here at RSPB Lakenheath Fen, our bitterns have also
suffered this year. Initially, signs were looking promising, with six “booming”
males present. However, as we started counting nests, it became clear that things
were not going very well. .............
We only seemed to have three or four active nests, compared to seven last
year. It is hard to say why they had such a bad year. Although the large amount of
rainfall didn’t help, it is more likely that the lower than average temperatures
would have made things difficult for them.
Our summer migrants have also had a difficult year. Not only were many of
them late arriving, they seemed to be less numerous than normal. Although it is
difficult to prove that this was a direct result of the weather, the cold and damp
weather would have made food scarce.
The first male golden oriole was not heard singing until May 11, which is
one of the latest recorded arrival dates on the reserve. It seemed for a long time that
this male was going to have a very lonely year, until late May when another male
and a female were confirmed to be present. This prompted lots of frenzied activity
and for a while, it looked like we were going to confirm breeding for the first time
since 2009........
Alas, it seems that whatever was going on was a case of too little, too late.
Presumably, lack of food would have been an issue in this case as well, as the birds
would have been spending more time looking for food and less time trying to nest.
Let’s hope for better news next year.
However, every cloud has a silver lining as they say! This year will go down
in history as the first year that both pairs of cranes that nest on the reserve have
fledged young in the same year. Both pairs had one young each and they both took
their first flights on Wednesday July 11. This is fantastic news, especially considering
how bad the weather has been. It not only shows that they are hardy birds, but
that they just get on with it whatever the weather. A lesson for us all!
On the 14th July the club held
its first all day "Sew In".
All members decided to make bags of all
shapes and sizes, with some very interesting
results, thanks to the guidance of Carol
Haigh and Anne Dyke.
Members arrived with their own sewing machines and a work shop was
soon set up, looking more like a factory than a village hall .but with a much
friendlier atmosphere.
We set to work and by lunch time you could see some good results
emerging. The day ended with most of the work completed and here are some
of the proud achievements.
We will have another work shop at a later date, perhaps a Christmas
theme, if you wish to join us contact Shelia O'Brien on 01842 829079.
FRIENDSHIP CLUB
Our president came to our Garden Party and many guests enjoyed the afternoon
that Janet provided in her lovely garden. There was a great deal of excellent
food and wine and much conversation and meetings first in the house
and then in the garden on a warm day. Two young ladies worked hard keeping
us all happy and making delicious cups of tea. It will be really lovely if we can
do this every year. Thank you to everyone who put in so much hard work making
the party so pleasant and enjoyable. The ladies hats were abundant and very
interesting, all of which were handmade, making the day very colourful. The
best hat prize was won by our Secretary Jackie, who went away with champagne.
The next club event will be
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support
on the 28th September,
and shared with Hockwold Primary School. Last year this was an immense success,
this year both the Friendship Club and the school hope to make it an even
greater success. Please come and bring all your friends. Details will be posted
all around the village so don’t miss out on this wonderful morning.
MAKE YOUR CUPPA COUNT
FOR CANCER CHARITY
Macmillan Cancer Support is once again
preparing for its largest annual fundraising event,
the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, In 2011 over
£10 million was raised across the UK, and this
year Macmillan wants to break that record and
help even more people living with cancer.
Though the given date for the event is 28 th
September 2012, participants are reminded that they can hold their Coffee
Morning for the charity on any date of their choosing.
Whether at home, in the church hall, at the village fete, on the beach or
in your workplace, a Coffee Morning for Macmillan can take place anywhere
you choose. It’s all about having fun, eating cake and making a big difference.
Even £1 can help cancer patients and their loved ones across the region and
beyond receive vital emotional, medical, practical or financial support.
Helen Chapman, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support
said: ‘Last year over £300,000 was raised in Norfolk from 1,700 events. It
would be wonderful if readers who have held events before could go one step
further by raising an extra £30 at their events. If everyone did this we could
potentially raise a further £50,000 – enough for a Macmillan nurse for a year!’
There are currently 2 million people living with cancer in the UK, and as
treatments improve this is likely to double to 4 million by 2030. Macmillan
needs your support now more than ever.
Macmillan is most famous for its nurses but we do provide other support
including a free phone line for anyone affected by cancer, financial support
for things like hospital trips and we also campaign for better cancer care.
So every cup of coffee on 24 September really will count.
Registrations are now open. Go to www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee or call
0845 602 1246 to receive your free fundraising pack and help make 2012’s
World’s Biggest Coffee Morning the biggest one ever for Macmillan Cancer
Support..
SEPTEMBER ARRIVES
September arrives and Autumn begins, has the summer ended.
I use to think the leaves would cling on until Spring...
September arrives and the sky loses brightness.
Winds start to whip leaves off of trees.
I use to wonder why I heard thundering as it rained to bring a
change to things.
September seems erratic and dramatic shifting as it does...
to prepare all for the Winter. Children return to school.
As cool winds descend September has come back again
so quickly.
September arrives what happened to Spring?
