In the Province of Liège, each year succeeds the next,

The 2011 version of “Group Excursions” is not exception 

to the rule. For, besides the basics not to be missed - 

comprising Liège and its many treasures, the thermal 

cities of Spa and Chaudfontaine, the keepers of a rich 

and fertile industrial past embodied by the Blegny 

coalmine, the Val Saint Lambert glassworks and the 

enterprising prehistory site of Ramioul, all being part 

of the “Route of Fire’, the High Fens (Hautes-Fagnes) 

and their turf-moors, a treat for nature lovers, the 

fertile Hesbaye region for gourmets who like it local, or 

Wégimont coming up with active holidays. The “Plopsa

Go on safari at a mere 25 km from Liège! 

In a magnificent country setting, yet only 25 km

Among the longest underground rivers in 

the world! 

The caves of Remouchamps have been visited by 

tourists since 1828. In those days, people used to 

move with the light of resinous torches. Today, 

the illumination brings the site to the fore and 

offers a show of unique splendour. 

A guide will introduce you to the history of some 

halls and galleries presenting unusual features. 

As for the return, you will be riding on one of 

the longest underground rivers worldwide: the 

Rubicon.

Real industrial archaeological museum of 60cm 

gauge railway. The CFS collection brings together

A former electric centre of the Sprimont quarries 

today houses the Museum of Stone. The building 

itself, a remarkable example of industrial 

architecture, is an important part of the collection, 

since stone has played such a major role in

of stone-working.

Banneux Marial Site 

In 1933, the Virgin Mary appeared eight times to 

little Mariette Beco, and made herself known as 

the “ Madonna of the Poor ”. Since then, six hundred 

thousand pilgrims from all over the world 

gather at the spring, and visit the various chapels 

dotted through the wooded area.

introduction to the historic château life in the 

Middle Ages, demonstration, an assault on 

the castle, attack using battering rams, catapult

Reservations: only available at the Tourist Office of the Valleys of the Burdinale and the Mehaigne.

M. Pierre HEINE, the owner of the mill, will 

be your guide as you discover the history 

and techniques of milling through the ages. 

You will be inspired by his enthusiasm as he 

describes how, since the early 20th century, 

electricity has also been produced here. 

3. 12:15 - 14:15 hrs, in Oteppe: lunch. At Oteppe 

Castle (“Domaine de l’Hirondelle” restaurant), 

you will be entertained to a three-course meal 

(country terrine, free-range chicken, potato

tobacco, sewing, medicines…: altogether over 

49,000 examples are awaiting you. And you 

may be absolutely sure to be overwhelmed by 

the scale and variety of this endearing prettybox 

collection! 

5. From 16:15 - 17:00 hrs: return to the “Domaine 

de l’Hirondelle” for some well-earned afternoon 

refreshments.

which set their mark on the history of Amay... 

At Ampsin, within a former forge dating back 

to 1897, the Firemasters Tourist Centre (Centre 

touristique “Les Maîtres du Feu’) invites you to 

discover the rich geology of the area and its industrial 

exploitations. Learn how clay is turned 

into bricks, how limestone produces lime, how 

aluminous schist becomes alum. 

A vast voyage through time, showing the various 

uses of these products in people’s lives past 

and present - Did you know that in Belgium 

every single inhabitant consumes 250 kg of lime 

every year? 

This remarkable repository of industrial memory 

offers many examples which bear witness to the 

activities of the region both past and present 

(stocking silos, lime-kilns). The geology discovery 

trail leads you to the old limestone quarry. 

Amay, a past with a promising future

Luncheon in the Grill-On-Vert restaurant at Jehay, 

just a step from the Château.

14:00 hrs: Château de Jehay 

The château of Jehay is built close to the forest. 

This impressive rambling 16th-century edifice, 

surrounded by moats, enjoys listed status as a 

top heritage site in Wallonia because of its architecture, 

unique in Europe. Easily recognisable 

by the chequered appearance, the former 

residence of Count Guy van den Steen opens its 

doors to you, inviting you to a memorable voyage 

of discovery through the world of arts and 

crafts. In the unique atmosphere of the château 

visitors enjoy an unforgettable experience of the 

elegance and refinement of life in bygone days 

in this splendid environment. Art-lovers will be 

bowled over by the range of these eclectic collections: 

furnishing, silverware, paintings, tapestries, 

ceramics, books… 

The Province of Liège, which has owned the Château 

since January 2000, has undertaken major 

restoration of the outbuildings, which have been 

open to the public since 2006. Besides tours, the 

boutique and rest and dining areas, visitors can 

enjoy a unique exhibition named ‘Paul Delvaux,

Amay, the riverside area on the banks of the river Meuse, on the border 

between Hesbaye and Condroz, boasts a unique heritage and history. 

16:00 hrs: Guided tour of the Collegiate 

Church of St George and St Ode 

Retracing the footsteps of St Chrodoara, you 

will meet this Merovingian princess who sleeps 

forever in the heart of the amazing collegiate 

church of St Ode and St George. This important 

Wallonia National heritage site has recently benefited 

by extensive restoration. 

Treasures housed in this unique building include: 

• The wonderfully-wrought sarcophagus of St 

Chrodoara (7th or 8th century). It features a 

woman holding a staff in her right hand and 

bears a Latin inscription to the glory of St Chrodoara, 

“noble, great and illustrious, who enriched 

sanctuaries at her own expense”; 

• The shrine of St Ode of Amay, a magnificent example 

of a variety of the art of 13th century gold 

and silver smiths (sometimes on view); 

• Monumental works of Fisen and Jupin ; 

• The splendid 18th century Eastern Cloister 

(there are only 7 examples in all Western and 

Central Europe) which now houses the Regional 

Museum of Archaeology.

A distinguished past, a remarkable location, 

seventeen museums, a lively and varied cultural 

life, huge pedestrian area offering ultra-cool 

shops and boutiques, all combine to attract increasing 

numbers of visitors to Liège. Visitors 

are charmed by the warm welcome, the festive 

night-time atmosphere, the many spectacles 

and performances which characterise this tourist 

and cultural metropolis. 

At Ans, the château of Waroux is the scene of 

superb cultural events. Then there is the fort 

of Loncin: it has been ruled that the said listed 

building should remain unchanged since August 

15th 1914. Flémalle, on the banks of the 

river Meuse, boasts the château of Aigremont, a 

splendid 18th-century residence overlooking the 

river, the famous Préhistosite of Ramioul and a 

fort recalling the battles of 1914 and 1940. Seraing 

enjoys an international reputation by virtue 

of the Val Saint-Lambert glassworks (Cristal 

Park) and the old Cistercian abbey which houses 

the prestigious industry.

The location 

• Cruises on the Meuse. The Meuse has shaped 

the people of Liège, giving them a sense of work 

with its driving power, of space with its winding 

bed and ramifications, and a sense of beauty in 

its gorgeous valleys. The Meuse has now become 

a tourist route as well. On board the Sarcelle IV, 

take a cruise on the Meuse to discover Liège 

from a different and enchanting viewpoint. Go 

with the flow for an hour - from Val Benoit and 

Canal Albert, glide under the city bridges Fragnée, 

Albert 1er, Kennedy, des Arches, Saint-Léonard 

and Atlas V. 

• Liège University’s Aquarium-Museum. Two 

rooms, “Biodiversity of the Aquatic World” and 

“Sharks and the Coral Reef”, invite you to take a 

dive without getting your feet wet, to discover 

the fish in the Meuse, our lakes and rivers, along 

with some 2,500 fish in 46 aquariums, from the 

oceans, seas, lakes and rivers all over the world.

the Meuse and the water world 

• Guided tour of Liège. Liège first sprang up between 

the Meuse River and the tomb of Saint 

Lambert. Its history can still be read between 

the river and the base of the hills, from the 

former Saint-Bartholomew collegiate church, 

up to the heart of the city: the Palace of the 

Bishop Princes, town hall, the market place and 

its ornamental fountain. Meander through the 

old town, taking the time to admire the historic 

heart of Liège, the cathedral and vicinity, the 

Outremeuse and the “Sentier des Coteaux”, the 

footpath up the left bank. 

The tours 

• This new programme “Liège goes with the 

flow” connects these three poles of attraction in 

Liège in a combination offering a unique opportunity 

to discover the various districts of Liège 

between the Meuse and the base of the hills. Admire 

the city from the water as you drift down 

the river and explore the other side of the surface 

as you discover the fish in the Meuse, and 

the underwater world of the entire planet.

Visit of Archaeoforum 

A 9,000-year journey through time beneath Place 

Saint-Lambert. The Archaeoforum on Place Saint- 

Lambert, right at the heart of Liège, houses a 

vast archaeological site where excavations have 

been conducted for more than a century. Archaeologists 

have found evidence of a history thousands 

of years old, with many distinctive stages 

and events: prehistoric habitation, the construction 

of a Gallo-roman villa, the assassination of 

Bishop Lambert, the building of churches dedicated 

to the holy martyr, the destruction of St 

Lambert’s cathedral by the Liégeois…

Part one: Man observes 

The first part of the exhibition features the serene 

beauty of our planet - a jewel worth preserving. 

Review of its past over 4.6 million years, 

through the stages of glaciation and re-warming, 

makes it possible to show that the present 

rate of climate change is unparallelled. Amazing 

photos and graphics reveal the alarming speed 

at which this change is taking place. 

Part two: Man is alarmed 

The second part is dedicated to the present and 

future effets of climate change 

in four vital areas: water (lack of drinking water, 

violence of rainfalls, water pollution…), food 

(loss of agricultural land, increased drought…), 

ecosystems (extinction of species, forest fires…) 

and health (mortality induced by heat and 

drought, air pollution…). 

Spectacular three-dimensional installations indicate 

the disastrous long-term effects of global 

warming and reveal the interacton between 

climate change and other problems, upon which 

it has a negative effect. These installations immerse

universal meeting on Climate Change (4/9/10 - 1/5/11) 

The climate is crucial! - Climate change is, after poverty, the greatest challenge facing the world 

today. This four-part exhibition, supported by state of the art technology and distinguished by 

impressive installations, seeks to inspire emotion and alert visitors to the future of our planet. 

The futuristic setting for the exhibition is the magnificent high-speed/TGV railway train station 

of Liège-Guillemins. 

understanding: passing through a streaming 

tunnel of refrigerated ice, walking over a moving 

ice-floe which is breaking up, and then along the 

cracked bed of a dried-up river, before entering 

the humid atmosphere of a flooded house. 

Part three: Man reflects 

The third part shows the mechanisms of climate 

change such as the carbon cycle, the greenhouse 

effect and solar reflexion. Key objects highlight 

the causes of the present global warming and its 

relationship with human activity. 

Part four: Man takes action 

The final part of the exhibition considers possible 

solutions aimed at mitigating global warming, 

featuring new directions in energy, health, 

water, ecosystems, food and habitat. 

“SOS Planet” is the first exhibition in Europe to 

present animation films in 3D. Extracts from Ben 

Stassen’s new animation film “Around the world 

in 50 years” are intended to alert the younger 

generation to current climate problems. Elsewhere, 

explanations designed for children are 

presented in the form of cartoon vignettes, 

which guide young visitors throughout the exhibition.

The tours 

1. The mine (2 hrs more or less) 

Following a short introductory film on the history 

of coal and mining (4 languages and 4 language 

sub-titles to choose from), the first stage 

of the tour (around two hours) will be a journey 

to the heart of this land excavated by man: a descent 

in the hoisting cage to 30 metres and 60 

metres underground, a journey through underground 

tunnels and a look at how coal was cut. 

Everything here is authentic. 

The propped up tunnels, the smell of the coal 

works and, even more dramatically, the noise of 

the various machines (which the guides set in 

motion for the visitors’ benefit, luckily only for 

a few minutes!), give a glimpse of the working 

conditions underground. Then there is a tour of 

the for coal washing and sorting facilities, from 

when the coal is stored until it is transported, 

allowing us to see the full cycle of coal, from the 

time it is mined to the time it is sold. 

Blegny-Mine : 

In an exceptional setting, visitors learn about the work and culture of the miners, and gain an 

insight into their harsh lives and the importance and history of an economy which provided a 

livelihood for generations of workers and their families, both here and elsewhere. Whole swathes 

of Northern Europe, including Wales, Northern Germany, Northern France, the Borinage and 

Campine regions, dutch Limburg, Liège and even the region of Aachen, spent decades in thrall to 

the collieries. 

2. Mine Museum (1.30 hr) 

In a museum housed in a 19th century building 

(with no fewer than twenty admirably preserved 

rooms), you will be told the entire history of 

mining through its particularly rich and diverse 

collection of objects. This exciting show provides 

a perfect educational counterpoint to the 

more emotional tour of the underground tunnels. 

• The day may be punctuated by a trip in a tourist 

fun train to view the orchards of the Basse- 

Meuse region (1 hr). This visit to Blegny-Mine 

can also be combined with a cruise on the River 

Meuse between Liège and Visé, which includes 

negotiating a lock (see next page). Finally, during 

the tourist season, free entrance on site to 

the “mine golf’’ made with objects from the 

mine. 

Blegny-Mine accommodation centre: designed for schools, groups, associations and sports clubs. The centre 

offers accommodation only or with board, 28 double rooms and 2 single rooms with all amenities (showers, WC, 

phone and Internet connections, TV). 

The centre is located at the rear of Blegny-Mine in a green setting

Journey to the land of black stone 

A CRUISE TO THE MINE! From 19th February to 30th November, it is 

possible (and great fun!) to go for a cruise on 

the Meuse on board “Le Pays de Liège” before 

visiting Blegny-Mine. 

Departure (at 10:00 hrs) is from the “Halles 

des Foires de Coronmeuse”, at the same spot 

at which the International Exhibition was held 

on the water in 1939.

The “Realms of Memory” association (“Les Territoires 

de la Mémoire”) is an educational centre 

offering tools and resources which enable the 

visitor to access past history (the Second World 

War, and Nazism). Through encouraging resistance 

to the ideas of right-wing extremism, the 

centre promotes the principles of democracy. 

The symbolic tour through the association’s 

lower regions comprises an audiovisual portrayal 

of the route, featuring some ten stations, 

taken by someone being deported to a concentration 

camp. It raises the questions of vigilance 

and personal responsibility. 

The Realms of Memory

The “Realms of Memory” also features itinerant

Outer appearance 

Built using reinforced concrete between 1932 

and 1935, it was erected on a ridge and covered 

approx. 65 ha. It is in the shape of an isosceles 

triangle about 900 metres up to the point and 

700 metres wide at the base. It was surrounded 

by the flooded Geer valley, by a water-filled antitank 

ditch, by a dry ditch and the Albert Canal 

which defended 8 close defence blockhouses. 

Dispersed over the massif, 7 artillery pieces and 

2 machine gun emplacements completed the 

fort’s fire-power.

1 h outside. As it is situated in a restricted military 

area, only guided tours of the superstructure 

and the interior of the fort are permitted by the 

National Defence authorities.

Eben-Emael Fort 

Superimposed onto the verdant Saint-Pierre Mountain site, Eben-Emael 

Fort stands over 60 metres above Caster cutting, cut in 1929 for the Albert 

Canal. 

The flower of Belgian forts, considered to be one of the most powerful in 

Europe in 1940, was only able to resist for 30 minutes when faced with the 

new methods of attack employed by the 3rd Reich’s airborne troops. 

Tour details 

After the visit and going through the entrance 

defences, you access the underground barracks 

at ground level where a guide will give you a 

short overview of the history and a description 

of the fort. 

Then you will be taken via various stairs and galleries 

into the command post, firing posts, telephone 

exchange and radio room. You will visit 

an ammunition store and an artillery casemate 

armed with 3,75 mm guns. 

Finally you will see the spectacular damage 

caused by a 110 lbs explosive charge placed at the 

foot of the foundations of the Maastricht case-

is a centre of technical and industrial culture 

housed in 2500m of a former steel factory. Explore

The Metal circuit 

Starts in the Old Forge in the Wallonia of the 

17th and 18th centuries where the country’s 

oldest furnace (1693) stands guard over the 

“makas” of the day, and over the world’s oldest 

rolling mill. Next, see Napoleon’s bath-tub, the 

jewel of the non-ferrous metal room, reminding 

us that Liège was also the cradle of the zinc industry.

The Energy circuit 

Starts in the Water Room, illustrating the evolution 

of hydraulic power from ancient times 

to Marly’s machine, installed by the Liégeois 

Renkin Sualem to supply the fountains of the 

Palace of Versailles. At the foot of an impressive 

steam engine from 1830, experience the industrial 

revolution and the world of engineering. 

Nearby, engines will thrust you into the room of 

gas and petroleum, where you will finish your 

tour with Zénobe Gramme, the brilliant Liégeois 

inventor, who will tell you all about modern 

electricity and centrals.

the “Hôtel de Police”, rue Natalis. 

By car: Auto-route E25 exit Liège Avroy/ Médiacité - 

Follow signs for Médiacité, then Fétinne. Left at

and Discovery Space) where Jean de Herve will

the vast 22-hectare complex of Wégimont provincial estate

exit no. 37 of the Liège - Verviers - Aachen motorway.

Castles of the river Meuse 

Among the hidden gems of the valley of the river Meuse are the region’s magnificent châteaux, 

exquisitely preserved or superbly restored. 

More than 80 châteaux dotted along the banks of the River Meuse, running from the 

province of Namur to the province of South Limburg in Holland, passing through 

the provinces of Liège and Belgian Limburg have been pointed out in the frame of 

the European project “Châteaux de la Meuse”. Explore this unique and amazing 

heritage in one single day on the occasion of this exceptional organized trip.

brochures “Castles of the river Meuse” and “Hotels and Restaurants” (available in

The château of Modave 

The château de Modave is perched on a rocky 

peak in the heart of a 450-hectare nature reserve. 

The château contains a score of richly 

decorated and lavishly furnished rooms. The 

most ancient part of the buildings dates from 

the beginning of the feudal period, the rest from 

the 17th century. The interior is sumptuously appointed. 

An interesting feature is a model of the 

Rennequin Sualem machine which made it possible 

to raise the waters of the Hoyoux to 57m, 

so that they reached the château. 

Modave is open to visitors from April 1st to November 

15th - Closed Mondays and Bank holidays. 

The château of Jehay 

The château de Jehay is one of Belgium’s most 

beautiful châteaux, with its chequered façade, 

the only example in Europe. Although some 

parts of the building date back to the Middle 

Ages, what we see today represents more an example 

of the style of the 16th and 17th centuries. 

Splendid collections of the last private owner 

and wooded Ttalina Style parkland.
