Swiss National Park
Covering a total of 170 km 2 , the Swiss National Park
is the biggest nature reserve in Switzerland. It was founded
in 1914 as the fi rst national park in the Alps. This alpine
landscape is a protected area and is home to a unique
world of animals and plant species. A visitor can see some
of the around 1,800 deer, 1,450 chamois and 270 ibex.
High wire park — Sur En
An adrenalin rush is guaranteed in the high wire park Sur
En in Lower Engadin. After completing the professional
The Tramblai is ideal for small children. A bigger challenge
is the Uina course with fi fteen different elements and two
metres above the ground. Still higher are the Sursass and
UNESCO World Heritage: The Albula and
Bernina Lines of the Rhaetian Railway
The Albula and Bernina tracks between Thusis in Graubünden
and Tirano in Italy are examples of outstanding
technical achievement. As the highest alpine transit route,
the Albula / Bernina lines belong to the most spectacular
railway lines in the world. Since 2008 the railway has
become part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
Parpaner Rothorn
From the Parpaner Rothorn summit you can see 1000 mountain
peaks. With the unknown standing next to the great
names, such as Palü and Piz Bernina. Just jump on the cable
car in the holiday resort, Lenzerheide and be transported
smoothly up to the Parpaner Rothorn to 2,865 metres.
The viewing platform is an open invitation to all sun worshippers
The Rhine Gorge “Ruinaulta”
Shortly after Ilanz the Vorderrhein (Lower Rhine) disappears
for 16 kilometres between enormous moraines, steep chalk
cliffs and the bizarre effects of erosion shaping the Rhine
gorge. About ten thousand years ago, a massive rock
slide of 10 – 15 km 3 fi lled the valley, the biggest such event
anywhere in the Alps. Over the ages the Vorderrhein has
cut its way through this huge debris leaving an extraordinary
landscape behind it.
Adventure park Madrisaland
Children run riot around the adventure park Madrisaland.
The fl ying-fox, the giant slide or the climbing garden all
allow your children to let off steam. At a slightly slower pace
in the animal park they can also enjoy milking goats and
riding ponies. In August 2009, here above Klosters on
the Madrisa, the adventure park was opened. Thanks
to a well-planned design, the park is also suitable for both
the blind and disabled.
Hiking — Youth Hostel, Lenzerheide
In 1932 the Lenzerheide youth hostel was opened, as
the fi rst building in Switzerland designed specifi cally for
that purpose. In 2006 the building was renovated. The
modern youth hostel captivates with its simple design
and functional room plan. The hostel reminds through
its contemporary architect and pictures of the early pioneer
period of Graubünden tourism. The hostel is now also
suitable for disabled people.
Wellness — Tschuggen Grand Hotel, Arosa
Guests can but catch their breath while looking out from
the Tschuggen Grand Hotel over Arosa and the majestic
mountains. Or be impressed not only by the luxury,
elegance, colour and amazing inner decor of the Tschuggen
Grand Hotel, but also by the many architectural features
incorporated in its design. But Tschuggen Grand Hotel is
setting the pace not only in Arosa, but even further afi eld
with its gastronomy. The hotel’s own coaster transports
its guests directly to the holiday resort with its hiking and
biking paradise.
The Piz Bernina is the most easterly of the alpine four-thousand-metre
peaks (4,049 m a.s.l.). The view from the Piz
Bernina is certainly grandiose. You can see mountains and
valleys from Graubünden across to the Tirol and South Tirol
and across the Swiss interior as far as the Bernese Oberland
and the Valais to the Barre des Ecrins, the most southerly
four-thousand-metre peak in the Alps. Only experienced
mountain climbers can tackle this staircase to heaven
but everyone can enjoy wonderful views of the Piz Bernina
from the Julier Pass, the Piz Corvatsch or the Diavolezza.
Electro Bikes — the easy way
to cross the Alps
SwitzerlandMobility in Graubünden Cable Car inclusive
Every time you turn the pedal the electro motor doubles
the strength. This is one delightful way to enjoy the
150 valleys of Graubünden, scale the mountains and cross
the passes. In many places you can rent E-bikes and on
the way charge up the battery. By the way, in Graubünden,
the batteries are recharged using energy from wind,
water and bio-fuel.
www.graubunden.com/biking
As the cable car pulls up towards the most splendid panorama, bikers
and hikers are agreed – there is no way more pleasant to climb into
the mountains. And in the mountain restaurant with fresh air the
Bündner platter can be enjoyed with local cheese and local driedmeat.
Delicious! For many holiday destinations in Graubünden,
guests staying overnight can often travel free with the cable car
using the “All inclusive” offer. The hotel guest’s ticket in a location
often provides further services free or on discount.
Vals – an exceptional thermal spring
in Graubünden
60,000 stone quartz tiles were hewn out of the local mountains
for the Vals thermal baths. Today Peter Zumthor’s
masterpiece is a major attraction. Two years after its
opening it was already designated a listed building. The
baths gain their water supply directly from Graubünden’s
thermal springs. For the visitor there are numerous indoor
pools available at varying temperatures and a large outdoor
pool with a glorious view into the mountains.
Bathing in crystal clear water
615 lakes spread out over Switzerland’s no.1 holiday destination.
Of course, some are fed by glaciers and are ice-cold.
But during the summer many others are warm and very
suitable for bathing. A wonderful example is the Caumasee
(Cauma Lake) which draws its water from underground
springs. The lake is hidden in the middle of the Flimser
forest at 997 metres. With its turquoise blue water
and picturesque coves, the lake outclasses so many
of the beaches you would fi nd in the Mediterranean.
