RM2DAG0RK–A Victorian photograph of a Woman collecting water at the Cragg Pump, Whitby, North Yorkshire in the late 1800s. Steps led down from the pump onto Pier road where fishwives would 'gip' or gut herrings as they arrived on the quay directly from the fishing boats. The pump was then the only source of fresh water in the area. The headress she is wearing is known as a 'Steerths' Bonnet, Taking its name from the village of Staithes where they were manufactured, though they were widely worn amongst the fishing communities elsewhere.
