He was also an actor who appeared in burlesque , variety shows and musical comedies. He starred for many years at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, london in their annual Christmas pantomimes, usually as a dame, and one stage joined the minstrels Harman and Elston. The trio became known as Harmon, Campbell and Elston. The versatile actor also starred in a silent film called Herbert Campbell produced by The British Biograph Company, as Little Bobby In 1899
