The monument designed by French ironworker Edgar Brandt was inaugurated on 11 November 1922. The monument commemorates the return of Alsace and Lorraine to France in 1919 and depicting the German eagle impaled by the French sword. The monument was destroyed during the Nazi occupation and was reconstructed after World War II.
